Amazon Game Studios’ MMORPG New World closed beta has been causing gamers’ EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 to overheat and brick.
As previously reported, players are colonists exploring the world of Aeturnum; a new frontier Age of Discovery-inspired land. However, there are fantastical and horrific forces stopping them.
The Corrupted take the dead men and beasts, and use their bodies to repel the new settlers. Shipwrecked, players make their stand on this new land in real-time combat with sword, spell, or pistol.
Those who pre-ordered the game gained access to the closed beta on July 20th. However many players have claimed a particular graphics card is being bricked by the game; the GeForce RTX 3090, with discussion suggesting it was specifically the EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 [1, 2, 3]. A thread on the game’s official subReddit has reached over 500 posts at this time of writing.
Users note that even when running the game on normal graphics settings, and having run more graphically intense games on Ultra, the 3090’s are seemingly being overloaded, with fans going full power prior to a crash. One user noted his GPU had hitting over 80 C, and the CPU hitting over 85 C.
On the game’s official forums, one of the Common Issues noted for Graphics & Performance is “99% GPU Load.” Customer service recommends enabling V-Sync, and making sure the computer has the latest Windows update and GPU driver updates. No note about specific graphics cards suffering the issue were made.
Some users noted in the Reddit thread that enabling V-Sync would help cap the frame-rate; the uncapped frame-rate being accused as the cause of the issue. While an uncapped frame-rate is a selling point, it seems Amazon Game Studios, or at least gamers, will have a solution via V-Sync. At this time of writing, Amazon Game Studios have made no statement.
New World launches August 31st on Windows PC (via Steam).
