Ni No Kuni 2: Tips And Tricks To Get You Started

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom combines multiple different genres into one. There's resource management, tactical fighting, and your regular RPG adventure. Understanding each part of the game will help you build your kingdom and level up faster. If you're just looking for an RPG experience, you won't have to focus on tactical wars and management too much if you don't want to. These things are like side quests, allowing you to pour continuous hours into the game after you get bored.

The different gameplay mechanics and hundreds of side quests allow you to get around 100 hours out of Ni No Kuni 2. If you just got the game, here are the basics of every mechanic and what you should focus on when starting.

Do Side Quests First

  • Powerful accessories
  • Kingdom recruits
  • Weapons

Ni No Kuni 2 may look adorable and innocent, but the combat is challenging. Like with most video games, completing side quests first makes you stronger. You won't be able to do decent damage unless you level up and complete certain quests like Top Marks For Trying, where you defeat difficult foes for powerful rewards. You can also find NPCs to recruit into Evermore, your new kingdom. This is important because expanding your kingdom means access to upgrades and gear.

Without doing the side quests, you'll find yourself frustrated every time a boss fight comes up in the main story. You can receive powerful accessories and weapons as well as explore the Studio Ghibli-esque world a little more by choosing to take part in the optional content.

The Best Things To Buy

  • Soreaway
  • Angel's Tear
  • Sixth Censer

These main things you need to make sure you're stocked up with:

  • Soreaway is your basic healing potion. You can sometimes loot these by defeating enemies, but your best bet is to buy in bulk before heading out to the next adventure.
  • Angel's Tear is your lifesaver. It will instantly revive a party member with some health. As expected, this is the most expensive of the three main consumables, coming in at 1,000 gold. If you have the money to spare, it's important to at least have two in your inventory.
  • Sixth Censer is essentially your mana potion. Aside from your melee abilities, and Higgledy abilities, you have a ton of magic ones too. If you plan on using magic more in battle, always stock up on Sixth Censor because your mana runs out quick in Ni No Kuni 2.

The Basics To Higgledies

  • Healing
  • Elemental resistances
  • Damage

Each Higgledy has a different set of skills that can overlap with other Higgledies or be completely unique to one. When looking at your Higgledy or party menu in the game, it can be confusing due to all the selections and words. You should have one Higgledy of each element for efficiency. You can read descriptions of what each skill does at the touch of a button while in the selection menu. There are four skills per Higgledy. For example, Scrap Scrap, There There, Sonic Tonic, and Higgledy Boom.

Pressing the button will cause these skill titles to change into descriptions. Scrap Scrap adds a small attack boost. There There heals one teammate a small amount and Higgledy Boom spawns a cannon that does damage. You may want to have one or two Higgledies that can heal and two others that do more damage or you may want skills that increase resistances and have attack buffs.

How you customize your Higgledy party is entirely up to you and your play style, but you should read through your Higgledies to make sure you're team is well-rounded.

How To Fast Travel In Ni No Kuni 2

You can't fast travel in Ni No Kuni 2 until you've physically found the fast travel location in the world. These are usually blue, glowing auras. By walking over them, you enable a new traveling point. Traveling from great distances uses Trip Doors. Traveling to closer locations is just known as local travel. Regardless of the name, they look and are done the same way. The only difference is when you have to select your desired location on the map.

Say you're inside Goldpaw. By opening the map, you'll see the town's internal map. From here, you can fast travel to the back of the town or toward the entrance of it with free will. To travel across the continent and go back to your kingdom, you must press the button to show you the entire map of Ni No Kuni 2.

Explore The Social Media App

There's a social media app in the game that replicates Instagram or Facebook called Leafbook. Here, you can "like" the posts of NPCs and see other NPCs' replies. There's no necessary use for this menu other than to indulge in the lore and adorableness of the animal-people in Ni No Kuni 2.

As you progress through the main story, certain posts will go up in the Leafbook showing the rest of the world's reactions to these events. Because you're a dethroned heir, every step you take is being watched and people have things to say. Some posts will also have nothing to do with world events. For instance, there is one user who frequently paints portraits of nature on his walks. There's also a guy obsessed with big bad monsters.

Make sure you check out the Leafbook after every main story milestone to see what else is going on in the story in the background.

TIP: To access the Leafbook, open the player menu, go to Library, and then Leafbook.

Kingdom Management

  • Crafting
  • Extra side quests
  • Upgrades

A lot of side quests allow you to recruit people into your kingdom. This allows you to build shops that will allow you to upgrade your own gear. You want more people in your kingdom not only for the sake of the story but so that you can use the labor of those people to your advantage in the game. You can build weapon and armor shops so you can craft things from scratch or upgrade your favorite gear. You can also build a store that specializes in Higgledy management, growth, and upgrading.

Kingdom management isn't just a fun time-waster, it lets you do everything you would do in a town, on your own. You can even open up your own general store.

When you visit Evermore, the first thing you want to do is collect resources your kingdom has been producing. This means money and materials. You do this in the main Kingdom Management menu by selecting Stores and Coffers to automatically collect. Then you can exit the menu and check for side quests from the citizens and use the stores to your advantage.

Fighting With Your Army

  • Earn battle points
  • Adjust Tactical Tweaker

There's tactical management fighting in the game. Destroy the enemy's tower defenses and make it to the end while keeping your army alive. If you don't like this genre of gameplay, it can be quite annoying to have to play in Ni No Kuni 2. Luckily, you'll only be forced to do it a few times. The rest are strictly side quest opportunities that you don't have to do.

You can adjust the type of army you take with you as well as planning what to spend money on for your team before preparing for a fight. The customization available for combat is astounding. As you progress through the game you'll meet new NPCs who can provide army support to you, allowing you to have different options for battle.

  • The Scurvy Sky-Vipers have a higher knock-back rate and have the ability to Air Raid, dropping multiple bombs on nearby enemies.
  • The Salty Sky-Serpents boost the effect of blue and gold balls and has the ability Defeaning Roar, which will stun enemies.
  • The Kitty-Catty Cutters focus' on support. They will split and share health when other army members are low. Their ability is to boost attack power.
  • The Silver Foxes boost the regeneration of the Might Gauge and have the ability Rousing Roar, which boosts defenses.

Apart from actively fighting in wars, you find the Tactical Tweaker in the player menu. Instead of relying on Higgledies and accessories to give you resistances and boosts, you can edit these things yourself in Tactical Tweaker. The more you upgrade your Tactical Tweaker with Battle Points, earned from fighting with your army, the more you can adjust your damage input and output.
