F1 2021 has made it three straight weeks at the top of the UK boxed charts while the closing days of the Tokyo Olympics resulted in a big boost for its official video game.
The video game release slate has been somewhat sparse these past few weeks. Other than F1 2021 and The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, there hasn't been much to write home about. That's one of the reasons why F1 2021 has managed to remain on top of the UK boxed charts for three weeks in a row at this point.
Codemasters' latest racing sim held on to the number one spot despite a 30% drop in sales according to GamesIndustry.biz. New players also don't seem to have been deterred by the ongoing issues with the game on PS5. Ray-tracing was briefly disabled but is now back, while the latest patch has switched off the game's 3D Audio as Codemasters attempts to find a fix.

Skyward Sword, which debuted at number one last month, is no longer in the top two. In fact, the Wii U port has dropped all the way down to number five thanks to a 46% dip in sales compared to last week. The biggest winner of the week is Sega's official Tokyo 2020 Olympics game. The title registered its highest placement yet as the real games came to a close last week, triple jumping all the way up to number three.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe prevented the Olympics game from reaching number two. Four and a half years after it initially launched, the Switch stalwart is closing in on Mario Kart Wii's total sales. Other top ten mainstays also remain in the chart including Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and GTA 5 which has now sold 150 million copies worldwide.
Only one new release managed to break this particular chart's top 40 this week. Iam8bit's Spiritfarer debuted at number 35. There was also reason for Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics to be happy as Marvel's Avengers re-entered the top ten. A promising sign that new players are being drawn in ready for the War For Wakanda expansion which goes live on August 17, 2021.
