Pokemon Unite is a lot of fun regardless of how you play, but after a while of braving solo queue you'll probably want to enlist a few pals to battle alongside you. The thing is, Pokemon Unite never makes it explicitly clear that you can add friends, let alone how to go about doing so.
Even if you're already friends with someone on Nintendo Switch, you won't necessarily be friends in Pokemon Unite. As a result, you need to manually add every single person you want to be friends with in the game itself, which can be a bit confusing.

How To Add Friends In Pokemon Unite
Fortunately, adding friends in Pokemon Unite is actually really easy. All you need to do is visit the home screen – the one in the screenshot above – and press X to bring up the main menu. Here, you'll see an option titled "Friends," which is where you need to go for all things friend-related.
If you're already friends with someone on Switch. you can go to "Friend Search" after clicking into "Friends." If you press the '-' button, all of your Switch friends who have played Pokemon Unite will come up. From here, you can choose which ones you want to add. After you add them, they'll get a request notification via in-game mail.
You can also manually implement people's Trainer IDs if you want to add them, which allows you to befriend people you're not already mates with on Switch, including players you might meet during standard online play. So, if you click with someone, you can check their Trainer ID and put it into the search bar at the top of the Friends screen. They'll get a request and decide whether or not they want to play with you again.
