Pokemon Unite: What Happens When There’s A Tie

Pokemon Unite's reception has been a mixed bag. Fans and critics alike seem to love the gameplay (our review scored it a 4/5 based on that), but other aspects haven't been met with such praise. Yet while the fanbase is split on whether or not Pokemon Unite is pay-to-win, or if Zapdos needs to be nerfed, everyone seems to find how the game handles a tie pretty baffling.

In the event that both teams – on any game mode – score the exact same amount of goals, the game doesn't just give you a tie. In a draw, whichever team scored the tied score first wins. So, if the enemy side is on 350, and you manage to get to 350 too, they would still win.

I can personally attest to how crushing that is, but it looks pretty hype for those on the other end of this draw. Fans are taking to Reddit and Twitter to share this recent discovery, often elated and shocked that they'll be moving up a rank despite the draw.

In r/PokemonUnite threads that share tied results, many seem disappointed by this mechanic, especially those that have been on the losing side. However, a few are defending it, saying that an actual tie where neither team moves up a rank would be a "waste of time", and that this method may reward the team who had a higher score throughout the match, rather than just caught up in the final stretch when there's a point multiplier.

Nintendo does have an interesting track record in how it handles ties in its games. In both Splatoon games, a draw in the turf war game mode just means the victor is randomly selected. At least this time around it kinda makes sense, right? On the other hand, you have the Super Smash Bros. approach of a "Sudden Death" match, where players fight until one dies, often only lasting a matter of seconds. Options, Pokemon Unite team, just saying.
