PS5 Won’t Force Updates for Offline Games on Discs

ps5

Sony finally revealed the user interface for PlayStation 5, which is packed with all kinds of interesting features like Activity Cards, Objectives and much more. However, it will also allow players to forego all of the online-centric features when it comes to offline games on physical discs. Speaking to Digital Foundry, senior vice president of platform and planning management Hideaki Nishino confirmed that the console would not force updates for offline titles.

This means that, much like the PS4, you can insert a game disc, install the title and then immediately start playing without having to update. Bear in mind that this is only for offline titles – online games still need updates before running. Also, this will only really benefit those who are using the standard PS5 instead of the disc-less Digital Edition.

It’s good to see Sony sticking to this approach with Nishino outright stating that not running the disc code was “out of the question”. There are more details about the UI that are still to be revealed so stay tuned. The PS5 is currently slated to release on November 12th in North America and Japan while it’s available for the rest of the world on November 19th.
