Relic Is Hours Away From Announcing A New Company Of Heroes Game

Much like the allied invasion of Normandy in the waning days of World War 2, it seems that Relic Entertainment has surprised us all with incoming news of a new Company of Heroes game. Or at least, that’s what we figure they’re going to announce from the countdown timer that just appeared on Relic’s Twitch channel almost 20-hours ago.

The countdown timer began on Relic's channel yesterday by showing old WW2 footage next to a countdown. Behind the footage rests a topographical map of Italy, and before that parts of North Africa (according to Rock Paper Shotgun, who looked at the countdown stream a few hours before I did).

Right now we're just under four hours away from finding out what this is all about, but if we had to guess, it looks like Relic is about to announce Company of Heroes 3. It'll likely start out in North Africa, following the events of the Desert War, Operation Torch, and the Tunisia Campaign, and then finish up with the Allied invasion of Italy in the summer of 1943.

Relic has never touched on the Italian campaign in any of the Company of Heroes games. The first one was about the invasion of Normandy, while the second game was about the Eastern Front. Taking Company of Heroes to North Africa and Italy is a brand new angle to approach the series and one that might add additional gameplay elements that were most relevant to the Allies success in these campaigns (such as air support).

However, it's also possible this might just be a Company of Heroes 2 DLC. Relic has been giving away CoH 2 for free in recent years, and the game recently got a 64-bit upgrade out of nowhere. That 64-bit patch might have been setting the stage for a larger upgrade that includes a brand new campaign.

Either way, we'll find out at 1 PM EST (10 AM PST) when Relic's livestream actually goes live.
