Remedy partners with Tencent for Vanguard co-op game

There is still a lot we don’t know about Remedy’s Vanguard project, but the studio has now partnered with Tencent to work on it.

Out of all the projects Remedy is working on, Alan Wake 2 is easily the one people are most invested in, especially now that it has an actual trailer. Today, however, the studio shared a bit more info on its multiplayer game codenamed Vanguard.

Namely, that Remedy has signed a global development, license and distribution agreement with Tencent. What this means is that Tencent is in charge of localising and publishing Vanguard in select Asian markets, while Remedy handles development and publishing it everywhere else in the world.

In addition, Tencent will develop and publish a separate mobile version of Vanguard, with Remedy’s project to be a console and PC release made using Unreal Engine.

A statement on Remedy’s website read: ‘Remedy and Tencent will be responsible for their own publishing and game operating costs in their respective territories while sharing a portion of revenue to the other party after the recoupment of the development costs.

‘As part of the agreement, Remedy has also licensed Tencent worldwide rights to develop and publish a mobile version of the game. Tencent will cover the costs for developing and publishing the mobile version. The parties have agreed on a separate revenue sharing scheme for the mobile version.’

Very little is known about Vanguard beyond it being a free-to-play co-op shooter and a new property. So far, Remedy has only said that it ‘combines Remedy’s narrative expertise and action gameplay into an immersive multiplayer experience.’

It doesn’t sound like it will be releasing any time soon either, as Remedy adds that Vanguard is still in the proof-of-concept phase.

It’s not especially surprising to see Remedy team up with Tencent. Aside from the latter being the largest gaming company in the world, it has partial ownership of Epic Games, which Remedy is also collaborating with to publish Alan Wake 2.

Beyond Vanguard and Alan Wake 2, Remedy is also working on the single-player campaign for CrossfireX (due in February 2022) and two more Control games: a sequel and a multiplayer spin-off codenamed Condor.
