Ryan Reynolds Is Mario And Doomguy In Free Guy Posters

Free Guy hits theaters later this week, and a number of video-game-based posters have been revealed to hype the movie right before it arrives.

Recent offerings are proving there might be something to movies based on video games after all. After years of far more attempts being hits than misses, Detective Pikachu appears to have turned that ship around. The records set by the live-action Pokemon movie were broken by Sonic the Hedgehog, and the new Mortal Kombat movie did well too.

Free Guy is the next video game movie hitting theaters, but this one will be a little different. Free Guy isn't based on an already existing video game universe. The setting for the movie is Free City, a video game world created specifically for the movie that seems inspired by Grand Theft Auto. Speaking of which, Guy, who is played by Ryan Reynolds, has been placed in a GTA-inspired poster to mark Free Guy's upcoming release.

In fact, Reynolds has been turned into characters from a number of different iconic games and series via some very cool Free Guy posters. The Deadpool actor takes the place of Mario for a Super Mario 64-themed poster, replaces Doomguy in another, and is even an Among Us crewmate in one of them. There are eight posters in total, each of which has been inspired by a different game.

Free Guy has been one of many movies to have its release date pushed back thanks to the pandemic. It was originally supposed to be released in 2020 but has been delayed by a full year at this point. It finally got its premiere last week, during which the video game tie-ins were plain to see. There was even a Halo Warthog in attendance which Reynolds and Ninja can both be seen posing with.

Free Guy is coming to theaters this Friday, August 13. It should be noted that unlike The Suicide Squad which can be watched on HBO Max, and Black Widow which is also on Disney Plus, Free Guy will not be getting a simultaneous streaming service release. It is only coming to theaters, which means studios will be watching its box office performance very closely.
