Sylvie Might Be Lady Loki And The Enchantress Combined

Sylvie was one of the breakout stars of the Disney+ Loki, a female version of the titular character to freshen up the Loki tropes. At first glance, she appears to be the MCU’s answer to Lady Loki, but she hates being called that and has instead taken to calling herself Sylvie. That name might not mean anything to you – I wouldn’t blame you – but it’s the name of the second Enchantress. The MCU appears to have mashed these two characters together, and it’s an intriguing prospect.

This is how Sylvie could continue into the ‘Sacred Timeline,’ existing in conjunction with the Loki we know, love, and sometimes hate. She could undergo the mantle of the Enchantress which would be fitting given the magical can of worms that WandaVision opened up with Agatha Harkness, the new Chaos storyline, and the Darkhold, that devilish book we saw Scarlet Witch scurrying through the pages of in WandaVision’s closing scenes. With that, let’s break down who Lady Loki and Enchantressare, and the ties that Loki’s Sylvie has to both.

Sylvie Lushton was born in Broxton, Georgia in the USA, and when Asgard came to nearby Oklahoma, she gained magical powers from none other than Loki themselves. With that, she moved to New York and joined up with the Avengers, taking the alias of the Enchantress, pretending to be Asgardian. Only it turns out, she never really existed at all. She thinks she did, but Loki conjured her up from nothing. Loki ‘liked the idea of creating a mortal’ who believed she was actually an Asgardian, so they did. All in all, she’s a character intrinsically tied to the God of Mischief with magical powers, a green bikini (yep), and a faux way of speaking that she’s hamming up to feel at home with her assumed people. That’s all well and good, but it doesn’t line up with the Sylvie we know from the Disney+ series. We saw that she was raised in Asgard after being adopted from the Frost Giants by Odin. That’s one helluva orphanage that she went to.

Still, it’s an origin that’s just plain ol’ Loki, not even akin to Lady Loki’s. See, following Ragnarok in the comics, Loki was reborn as a woman. She told Balder she’d never lie again and promised she had no more devilish schemes and machinations in the works. Post-Ragnarok (the event, not the movie) she was desperate to gain the trust of the Asgardians. This is a plotline that we could see the Loki of the Sacred Timeline undergo. In that regard, we could see Sophia Di Martino resurface under this new role much like how Tom Hiddleston played the Sacred Timeline Loki, this new Variant Loki, and President Loki. That’s a lotta Lokis.

The largest similarity to Lady Loki that Sylvie actually has, beyond them both being women, is that she seemingly isn’t interested in being the scheming villain that Loki is known for. The name change, in that regard, makes sense. In that vein, the links to both comic characters from the MCU’s Sylvie are tenuous at best. What we’re seeing is Marvel Studios creating an entirely new character with vague inspirations from two others in the comics. She has the motivations of being a better person that Lady Loki had, the blonde hair and name of the comics’ Enchantress, and an all-new backstory, that of a child who ended up on the run from a fascist regime of time-travelers.

Post-Loki finale, she’s also now on a collision course with infinite Kangs. She’s a hybrid of both but original at the same time which is an exciting prospect. Despite unleashing Kang and refusing to walk away with Loki, she could go on to be an Avenger in the MCU. That’d certainly be a shift in gears and an interesting sight to behold if Thor is still with ‘em. Whatever happens, Hiddleston is returning to the MCU as Loki by way of his new Variant version in the second season while the Kid Loki we met could be set to join the ranks of the heavily-teased and rumored Young Avengers. Meanwhile, we could see Sylvie take the alias of the Enchantress. The MCU’s future seems to be comprised of Thunderbolts (or Dark Avengers), the Young Avengers, the New Avengers, and now, an infinity of Kangs all vying for Multiversal domination. The TVA is in disarray as this new Conqueror takes over, and Loki and Mobius’ relationship has come to a screeching halt as his memory has seemingly been wiped. The future is uncertain, the past is uncertain, the present is uncertain. What is certain is that Sylvie and Loki will return. That’ll be an intriguing reunion.
