A new interview revealed Square Enix says a Final Fantasy X-3 synopsis exists, and the possibility the game finally gets made is not zero.
The new interview with Famitsu (via Ryokutya2089 and Famitsu) came in a 30-page spread for the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy X, with responses from character designer Tetsuya Nomura, event planner Motomu Toriyama, and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, among others.
In the interview noted while Square Enix says a Final Fantasy X-3 synopsis exists, it’s not exactly progressed beyond the initial concepts of what a third game would entail.
“Nojima-san wrote a synopsis of what X-3 would be like if it existed,” Nomura said. “Final Fantasy X: Will (an audio drama based on the game) and Final Fantasy X-2.5 were also written based on it. It’s asleep now, but the concept itself is there.”
Toriyama added, “The possibility is not zero. First of all, we have to finish the remake of Final Fantasy VII before we can talk about it.”
Lastly, Nojima noted, “At one time I had the opportunity to work with people who said they entered the game industry after playing Final Fantasy VII, but now that phase has shifted and I’m working with people who said they entered the industry after playing Final Fantasy X.”
The previous two games have been more recently re-released as Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster across Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PlayStation 3, and PS Vita. In case you missed it, you can find our thorough review on the HD remaster here (we highly recommend it!).
