Stardew Valley: All Random Events And What They Do

Quick Links

It's no secret that Stardew Valley is packed with content. Each day brings something new, whether it be festivals or new areas to explore. Along with this, you will have the opportunity to experience a random event each night.

There are several random events that will have a chance to happen each night. In this guide, we are going to go over each one and what it does. First, let's take a look at how random events work, as well as the two main types.

What Is A Random Event?

As their name suggests, these events have a random chance to happen each night. There are some requirements but overall, the events are random.

In addition to these events, nothing may happen. These events are selected at random, so there is a chance that an event is selected that you haven't completed the requirements for.

For example, if an event requires you to have a clear space on your farm, but there is no room, the event will technically trigger, but it won't actually do anything. Nothing will also happen the night before you get married as well.

Random events are split into two categories; farm events and personal events. Farm events are prioritized and happen on your farm, while personal events happen if no farm event has been selected. Now, let's take a look at all farm events below.

Farm Events

These are farm events, meaning that they are prioritized. Each night, one of these will be randomly selected, regardless if it does anything or not.

Earthquakes

An earthquake is the only night event that is not random. It has a set day that it will occur on, that will never change.

On Summer Three of your first year, an earthquake will happen. This will remove the boulder heading to the railroad area in the mountains. Afterward, you will have access to the railyard and spa. This area also contains the Summit and Witch's Swamp, which can be unlocked later in the game.

Bundle Completion Reward

If you complete a bundle during the day, then the random event selected is a cutscene related to the reward.

For example, if you finish the Crafts Room bundle, you will unlock the bridge repair for the bridge leading to the quarry. That night, you will see a cutscene of Jumino repairing the bridge.

For more information, check out this guide on completing the Community Center and all bundles. If you chose the JojaMart route for the Community Center, this event will still occur.

Crop Fairy Grows Crops

In every season besides Winter, there is a one percent chance that the Crop Fairy will appear. If the Crop Fairy event is triggered but it is raining, nothing will happen.

When the Crop Fairy event is successfully triggered, the fairy will choose a random five by five area on your farm and fully grow all of the crops.

The Crop Fairy cannot grow an area if the center contains wild seeds. If this happens, then the event will do nothing.

The Witch Appears

In addition to being visited by the Crop Fairy, you will also have a one percent chance to be visited by the Witch. The Witch will choose a random coop to work her magic. Since these buildings don't have a 100 percent chance to be selected, there is a chance that nothing will happen.

A coop will have an 80 percent chance to be selected for a visit. Coops are selected at random if they meet the following requirements.

  • Upgraded at least once
  • Less than 50 objects are placed inside

The Witch will leave one void egg inside of your coop. If you have 100 percent perfection, then there is an additional chance that she will leave a golden egg.

If you have a slime hutch, then there is a 50 percent chance that the Witch will visit this building if there is at least one slime inside and no Wicked Statue. In this scenario, the Witch will turn slimes into black slimes.

Meteorite Landing on Farm

There is a one percent chance that a meteorite will land on your farm. This is basically a giant rock that drops six iridium ore, six stone, and two geodes.

When a meteorite lands, you will see the message 'an explosion was heard in the night…'. This is the sound of the meteorite crashing on your farm.

To mine a meteorite, you will need to have at least a gold pickaxe. The meteorite will not despawn, so if your tools aren't strong enough, you don't have to worry about it disappearing. Be sure to visit Clint to upgrade tools!

Unfortunately, a meteorite can destroy parts of your farm. The meteorite will land on any two by two area that does not have any placed objects, water, or animals. This means that it may land right in the middle of your crops. Although placing sprinklers closer together may be inefficient, it will lower the chances of a meteorite landing on valuable crops.

Strange Capsule

After your first year, there will be a 0.8 percent chance that the strange capsule event occurs. This is a capsule that crash-lands on your farm. Inside, the capsule will contain some sort of alien creature.

Eventually, the alien inside will break out, and the capsule will appear with the glass shattered. This means that there is now an alien on the loose in Stardew Valley.

You can catch glimpses of the alien at night, and they usually appear in the bus stop area. The alien will not have any impact on your farm, but it's fun to spot it at night.

Stone Owl Appears

The last farm event is the appearance of a Stone Owl. This is a stone statue of an owl, described as 'very fine'.

The Stone Owl has a 0.5 percent chance of appearing, and more than one can be on your farm at a time. There are no uses for the statue, but it makes a nice decoration. You can also buy a Stone Owl statue at the Night Market, but its appearance is different.

Personal Events

These are events that occur if no farm event has been selected. If a farm event was selected but nothing happened, a personal event will not occur.

Child Birth

If you are married to either an NPC or another player, there is a five percent chance that they ask you if you want to have a child.

When married to an NPC, you will need to have a ten heart relationship and the nursery upgrade of your farmhouse. Additionally, you cannot already be preparing for a child (pregnancy or adoption) or have recently had a child.

When married to another player, these same conditions apply. You will also need to be sleeping in the bed of the main farmhouse.

After accepting to have a child, a baby will be either born or delivered in 14 days.

Remember, you can decline having children. There are no consequences to saying no. This event can happen again later.

If you do agree to have children and then decide you don't actually want them, you can visit the Dark Shrine of Selfishness inside the Witch's Hut. Offering one prismatic shard to this shrine will turn your children into doves forever.

Animal Birth

With no farm events selected, then there is a 50 percent chance that a farm animal gives birth. This will happen randomly to one animal in a barn if it isn't at maximum capacity. Each animal within the barn will have an equal chance to be selected. If an animal that is chosen is a baby or has had pregnancy disabled, then the event will do nothing.

Additionally, if you decide that you do not want an additional farm animal, you can sell it from the information panel. An animal's price will increase as they age though, meaning that babies do not sell for very much.

Animal Attack

If no other event was chosen, then an animal attack event is guaranteed to happen. This event has a 50 percent chance of doing nothing though.

When this event does happen, a barn or coop will be chosen if it meets the following requirements.

  • The barn door is closed
  • Animals are outdoors, with no way inside

While sleeping, you will hear a howling noise. One animal outside of the barn or coop will disappear, and all of your other animals will be 'stressed and paranoid'.

This event is a bit grim, so make sure that all of your animals are inside of their barn or coop each night. Although this event still has a 50 percent chance of doing nothing, it's better to be safe.

That's all the random events that will have a chance to trigger each night! As you play, you may notice that events don't actually happen each night. As mentioned above, this is because if an event is chosen, there is an additional chance that it does nothing.

Overall, you will be able to witness all of these events after a few seasons of playing.
