A Donkey Kong expansion to Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan has been rumored for some time but now finally appears to be a reality. On July 17, Twitter user @Hibirobo_Disney posted a series of photos which seem to show construction happening at Super Nintendo World.

A long backdrop wall of palm trees reminiscent of scenes from the Donkey Kong series has been installed. The wall bears a strong resemblance to those seen surrounding the attraction in a leaked 2016 mockup of what the expansion to the park could potentially look like.
Neither Nintendo nor Universal Studios Japan have officially announced a Donkey Kong expansion to the park but some clues within Super Nintendo World have suggested for some time that the rumors were more than rumors. There’s a locked door in the park covered by a curved arch that features colors and design elements that look very Donkey Kong Country-ish. Additionally, palm trees seem to be part of the mix of trees in the Yoshi ride, which runs right over this door. And while Yoshi’s Island, which the Yoshi ride takes its cues from, has a bit of its own tropical vibes in certain stages, it’s worth noting the placement of those palm trees in relation to the proximity of this mystery door in the park. And as we well know, Nintendo is extremely deliberate about everything they do — my gut is telling me the palm trees in this area of the park are no coincidence.
Super Nintendo World was forced to close in April — just a month after its grand opening — due to a surge of COVID-19 cases in the region, but reopened again with limited capacity in June. The Donkey Kong franchise just celebrated its 40th anniversary on July 9, but the last Donkey Kong game was Tropical Freeze in 2014 for Wii U (later ported to Switch in 2018).
