Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: 10 Of The Most Annoying Characters To Face Online (& How To Counter Them)

With a stellar cast of over 80+ playable fighters, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is bound to have a few members of the roster who aren’t necessarily fun to play as, and definitely, some players dread to go head-to-head with.

These “annoying” characters become annoying thanks to the usage and over-reliance on the tools within a character's arsenal, but countering a fighter and what they possess is the key to finding success on the battlefield. In an online environment, these oftentimes spammy characters become even harder to deal with. Despite this, there are ways to get around these characters, climb the metaphorical Smash Bros. ladder, and achieve Elite Smash status.

10 Olimar: Astronaut From A Distant Planet

When Super Smash Bros. Ultimate hit shelves late 2018 with the tagline of "Everyone is Here," some fans were excited to see all of their favorite characters make a return to the franchise. Olimar (and his alternate skin Alph) was a character that some fans were not excited to see back in the flesh.

This Pikmin-wielding astronaut thrives when put against fighters who need to get up close and personal. His raw power is ridiculous considering he's a projectile character. The best way to find success when going up against an online Olimar is to maintain that distance. Some of Olimar's worst matchups in the game consist of R.O.B., Simon and Richter Belmont, and Zelda. All of which are heavy projectile-based fighters as well.

9 Inkling: Covers Opponents In Paint, And Pain

Every aspect of this character can potentially cause serious damage. Inkling's side-special roller can cause a bury effect to happen, and lead to some easy up-smash, and forward-smash confirms. Not only that, but Inkling has some brutal combos that can lead to some very high percents and some well-established kill-confirms that make Inkling one of the most difficult opponents in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The way to beat this wildly speedy squid is to bring the fight up close, and personal. Sword characters such as Lucina, Marth, and Shulk are heavy Inkling counters thanks to their great mid-ranged sword attacks, and landing a strike on Inkling is easy if the player continues to utilize the large blades, thus shutting down an Inkling player before they even get their combo started.

8 Mr. Game & Watch: Some Player's Least Favorite Matchup

Mr. Game & Watch seems to counter a vast majority of characters in the game. His easy to perform combos, great out of shield options, and fast smash attacks make this black blur a challenge on any player's route to Elite Smash.

Ike, Shulk, and Chrom are great against Mr. Game & Watch and counter a majority of his move set. Game & Watch's biggest flaw is his weight, and playing characters that hit hard and find confirms early is a great way to beat him.

7 Min Min: The Arms Fighter Not Many Can Handle

DLC Fighter Min Min is the designated heavy destroyer and has by far the best range in the entire game. Her long arms allow her forward smash/side special to stretch across the entirety of most stages in the game. Not only that, but her arms can even reach off-stage and cause some real suffering for characters with a mediocre recovery.

Min Min is great on stage thanks to her ranged attacks but the simple solution when facing an online Min Min is to jump over her arms and attack her. Fast combo heavy fighters easily find success against the Arms representative by getting right in her face and hitting her where it hurts. Pikachu, Palutena, and Diddy Kong are great against Min Min.

6 Simon And Richter: Vampire Slayers And Online Menaces

Simon and Richter are new additions to the roster in Ultimate and to much dismay, are projectile-based characters. The projectiles at their disposal can be a real pain, especially if the Simon or Richter player is ONLY throwing projectiles.

Similar to Min Min, the Belmont Family vampire hunters are easily countered by combo-based fighters. Pikachu, Pichu, and Joker can easily grab a Simon or Richter player, throw them off-stage, and take advantage of their poor recovery for the easy 3-stock victory.

5 Yoshi: The Master Of The A Button

The most annoying thing about Mario's loyal pet is that he might be the best at escaping combos in the entire game. His physical attacks such as neutral aerial, and down aerial are great out-of-shield options and allow the green dinosaur to escape any combo with ease, and deal damage in the process.

Yoshi's weaknesses come in the form of mid-ranged fighters, specifically sword-wielding fighters. Cloud, Roy, and Lucina can get by online Yoshi players with ease thanks to their fast sword attacks, and powerful aerials since Yoshi players love to be in the air.

4 Young Link: Ocarina Of Time Link Runs Out The Clock

By far the most annoying amidst the trio of Link's in the game, Young Link can run away from his opponent and play the stalling game for as long as Young Link mains deem necessary. The barrage of projectiles this character contains is on par with that of the Belmonts, but they're even more annoying to deal with. Young Link's projectiles are faster, and combo into one another, meaning opponents can be trapped in a rage-inducing never-ending wall of projectiles.

Characters that can stay out of Young Link's range, and fire back some projectiles of their own can counter an online Young Link's gameplan quite easily. By making Young Link approach, he can be dispatched quite easily. Fox and Wolf are good picks to counter the young projectile spammer.

3 Sonic: Beloved Character With A Dreaded Playstyle

It's quite odd that such an iconic character like Sonic has potentially the most irritating move set in all of Ultimate. His ridiculous speed rarely factors into actually fighting his opponent, but running away and repeating the same moves for the entirety of a match.

Sonic's spin dash attack can be a real pain to deal with, but Pikachu, Mega Man, and Wolf are easily able to counter most of the moves in the blue hedgehog's arsenal by hitting him while he's spinning.

2 Samus: The Classic Projectile Camper

Samus and her echo fighter, Dark Samus are pretty synonymous for being perhaps the most dreadful projectile character in the entire game. It doesn't help that Samus has some of the best projectiles in the game for zoning and running away such as her Charge Shot and down special bomb drop.

The best way to counter Samus is to fight fire with fire. Playing fast, combo-oriented fighters with projectiles of their own such as Joker, Fox, and Falco is a great way to beat this online spammer.

1 Ness: The Guardian Of Elite Smash

The online Ness is a powerful entity in itself. Offline Ness players seem to find minimal success, but Ness is the one and only gatekeeper of online Elite Smash. Many Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players fear a majority of the Earthbound protagonists' attacks. His back throw is one of the strongest in the entire game, and Ness' horrible "PK fire" attack is truly the stuff of nightmares.

The way to get around Ness and his powerful psychic attacks is a lot easier said than done. One pro tip to counter the psionic monster is the use of a character with range such as again, Lucina, Sephiroth, and Young Link.
