Terraria: King Slime Boss Guide

Quick Links

The King Slime is a totally optional boss in Terraria, as in you don't need to defeat it to progress through the game. However, thanks to some very useful drops – we're looking at you, Slimy Saddle – it's almost always worth defeating the King Slime if it turns up.

There are a few different ways to summon the boss, as well as simple methods to farm the King for drops. One or two changes were also made in Terraria 1.4 to make the boss harder and more difficult to exploit for Souls of Light and Souls of Night in Hardmode. Here's our guide.

How To Summon The King Slime

The King Slime is a pre-Hardmode boss and can be summoned in a couple of different ways, but may also spawn on its own.

  • During the Slime Rain event – The Slime Rain event has a chance to randomly happen on any given pre-Hardmode day. You need to defeat 150 Slime for the King Slime to spawn, or 75 if you have already defeated the boss before.
  • The Slime Crown – If you want to farm the King Slime for drops, you need to craft the Slime Crown. It's created with 20 Gel and either a Gold or Platinum crown.
  • Random Spawn Chance – There is a very slim chance that the King Slime will just spawn on its own, providing you're on the edge of the map and standing close to some grass.

How To Defeat The King Slime – Tips And Tricks

The King Slime can spawn at any point during your Terraria adventure but is only really scary right at the start of the game. Considered a side-boss, the King Slime does the second-highest damage of any boss in pre-Hardmode, but still isn't that hard to beat.

  • Piercing weapons are a great tactic in pre-Hardmode. That includes a bow with Jester's Arrows, for example, or the Ball o' Hurt Flail. This allows you to hit the boss and the Slimes it spawns at the same time.
  • Ranged weapons and mobility are useful against King Slime. You will especially need mobility during Expert mode, as the Spiked Slimes will fire projectiles at you which will have to be dodged.
  • You might as well kill all the slimes that the King spawns, as they will drop mana and health to help you live through the fight.
  • The King Slime can teleport all over the place as of Terraria 1.4, which makes the previous tactic of trapping it in a small area literally impossible.

How To Farm King Slime And What The Boss Drops

Here is a list of the drops from King Slime:

Item Drop Rate What It Does
Solidifier 100 percent (yep, you will always get a Solidifier when you kill the King Slime, even after your 12th boss fight) The Solidifier is used to craft lots of different Slime items, like slimy furniture, Pink Slime blocks (which cancel fall damage), and Frozen blocks, which let you slide around.
Slimy Saddle 25 percent Spawns the Slime Mount, one of the best pre-Hardmode mounts as of Terraria 1.4.
Ninja Hood 33 percent The Ninja Armor set has a unique animation, a 20 percent movement speed increase, and a base chance of 33 percent not to consume a thrown item. The King Slime will always drop one of the armor pieces per fight.
Ninja Shirt 33 percent
Ninja Pants 33 percent
Slime Hook 33 Percent The Slime hook is one of the better pre-Hardmode hooks, as it allows you to fire three grapple projectiles at the same time.
Slime Gun 33 Percent Almost totally useless, the Slime Gun fires slime that causes enemies, NPCs, and players to drip with blue slime for a short period. Fun, but it deals zero damage.
Lesser Healing Potion Between 5-15 potions at a 100 percent chance. Just your regular old Lesser Healing Potions. Can be sold to the Merchant if necessary.
King Slime Mask 14 percent A cosmetic item that can be worn on your character's head. Turns you into a Blue Slime. Cute.
King Slime Trophy 10 percent Building a trophy hall of Boss Trophies? You might need to kill the King Slime a few times before getting this drop.

As well as killing the King Slime over and over to get every item drop, you can also spawn the King to farm for items that drop from mobs in certain biomes. The slimes that the King Slime spawns count as regular biome mobs, so you can get things like Biome Keys in Hardmode, or the Cascade pre-Hardmode Yoyo in the Underworld.

However! Patch 1.4 did remove the method of farming the King Slime for Souls of Light and Night during Hardmode. It was a bit too easy to get your hands on these useful crafting materials.
