Rocket League Players Hit Out At Season 4’s Casual Penalties

Rocket League's new season has brought a fair few rule changes along with it, and one, in particular, has riled up quite a few players.

Rocket League went free to play last year and is already in its fourth season since doing so. Season four kicked off earlier this week and brought with it a new stadium, car, and a fair few tweaks to how Rocket League works. One of the main changes was how exactly players are penalized for leaving online matches before they've finished.

Prior to the start of season four, players were not punished for leaving a casual match. That has now changed. Leaving one match per day will not result in a punishment. However, leave two matches on the same day and you'll be locked out of matches for five minutes. The more matches you leave prematurely, the longer the penalty, all the way up to a two-hour ban for leaving seven matches in the same day.

While penalties for leaving ranked matches were previously in place, a lot of players aren't happy about the addition of them to casual matches. A Reddit thread in which a number of players have addressed their concerns about the changes continues to get a lot of attention. Many are asking for the change to be reversed, highlighting that Rocket League's casual playlists are labeled casual for a reason.

Prior to the introduction of casual penalties, players could drop in and out of matches without fear of receiving a timeout. That meant even if you were 4-0 down and someone dropped out, another player would replace them. That's another change ushered in by season four. Players will no longer be added to matches in which a team is three or more goals down. Bots will take their place instead.

Rocket League players tend to opt for casual matches if they're not sure they'll have the time to play a whole match. The changes take away from the casualness of the playlists, but on the other hand, players leaving casual matches can be just as frustrating for those trying to avoid a 6-0 beating, especially when they're paired with bots instead of real people. Psyonix is yet to respond to the player backlash.
