For now, Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum have grossed $25.27 million but that figure is sure to rise with the inclusion of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Currently, Skyrim has earned around $30 million but could see a boost with the special Anniversary Edition slated for release in November 2021 on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.

Although Skyrim is not a direct sequel, it takes place 201 years after the fourth game, Oblivion. The first Pokemon games to appear on the Game Boy Advance proved to be among the most successful in the series. The concept of double battles is simple to grasp, two Pokemon fight instead of one, but a bit more difficult to execute. With two Pokemon to account for, that’s another set of abilities to plan for. Instead of countering a Fire-type with a Water-type immediately, you might have to reconsider if the opponent’s second Pokemon is an Electric-type. This little wrinkle added a plethora of new strategies to an already exciting combat system that paid off in the sales.

Pokemon Gold And Silver/Crystal – $42.21M

Among the sweeping terror of Y2K in 1999, Nintendo released Pokemon Gold and Silver. While there aren’t direct sequels in the series, similar to Final Fantasy, there were many reasons why Gold and Silver felt like one to Red and Blue. After completing the Johto region, you can travel back to the Kanto region from Red and Blue. It was incredible being able to challenge the old Gym Leaders again, but even more mind-blowing to battle Red, the old protagonist.

Adding the Kanto region paid off huge for Nintendo in both a commercial and critical sense. Not only has Gold, Silver, and Crystal (the definitive edition) earned $42.21 million, it’s been heavily debated if they are the best in the franchise. Regardless, Gold and Silver were exceptional follow-up titles to two classics.

Pokemon Red And Blue/Green/Yellow – $59.52M

The ones that started it all. Pokemon Red and Blue introduced us to a magical world with unique, adorable, yet dangerous creatures. While some people study these pocket monsters in a scientific sense, others used them in battles for glory. The initial success of Red and Blue led to the Pokemon anime, and then Pokemon Yellow was released, which was more heavily based on the show.

Nintendo “remade” Yellow for the Switch in 2018 with Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. The Let’s Go games featured a more casual approach to the otherwise intense games but followed the story of the original games. This collection of games have grossed an astounding $59.52 million, more than enough to rank as the second best-selling Nintendo game and earning the top spot overall in RPGs of all time.
