The Non-Existent Organization Will Cease to Exist
Earlier this week, Ubisoft announced XDefiant, which is basically a first person shooter crossover game under the Ubisoft umbrella. It has the DNA of a bunch of titles like Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, and other Tom Clancy games. This is not the first time Ubisoft tried this sort of thing out. Remember Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad?
Elite Squad is a mobile free-to-play strategy game that brings characters from all over the Tom Clancy-verse to fight against the forces of evil. The marketing used for Elite Squad was famously tone deaf, using imagery similar to Black Lives Matter to depict terrorism and speech that mirrors the misrepresentation of civil rights movements.
Needless to say, there was quite a bit of controversy surrounding the game’s release in October. Now, less than a year later, Ubisoft has announced that servers for Elite Squad will be shutting down.
Elite Squad launched on October 4th, 2020. The game will no longer be available to play starting on October 4th, 2021. Happy anniversary, hit the lights on your way out. This message went out with the newest and last update to the mobile game.

Unfortunately for the more invested players, the plans beyond Season 2 of the game will not be seen through. Maybe if the above controversies were avoided, there would be a more sustainable player base to keep the game going.
Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad will be available on mobile devices until October 4th.
