There could be some good news in store for fans of the classic Tomb Raider titles. Composer Nathan McCree, who wrote the music for the original PS1 classics, has teased that he and series creator Toby Gard have a big announcement planned for Gamescom tonight. The Tweet from McCree is vague enough to possibly signal something related to Lara Croft or maybe a brand new project entirely.
Many are speculating that McCree and Gard have been hired on for the next installment in Square Enix's saga, but I'm not so sure. To me, this sounds like it is either a new IP in the vein of Tomb Raider or something like a classic series remaster. We've seen the PS1 games get fan-made updates over the years, so it would be awesome if the original creators were welcomed back to breathe new life into the old-school games.

What throws a wrench into that plan is that Gard has been involved in some of the later Tomb Raider titles. When Crystal Dynamics rebooted things with Tomb Raider: Legend back in 2006, Gard contributed some writing for the script. He stuck with the company until the 2013 reboot, but hasn't touched the series since.
With Square Enix looking to unify the timelines of its rebooted series and the original games, maybe this really is a sign of good things to come. It would certainly give more credibility to the latest project, especially after the dud that was Shadow of the Tomb Raider and its convoluted mess of a plot.
