Twitch Will Now Tell Suspended Users What They Did Wrong

It used to be that streamers would get banned from Twitch without any reason being given. You could email Twitch Support for an explanation and they'd give you a vague description of what part of Twitch's Terms of Use was violated, but that was about it.

However, that changes as of today. Twitch has just announced that going forward, suspended streamers will be given an explanation of what they did wrong along with their suspension notice. "As of today," wrote Twitch, "enforcement notifications sent to suspended users will include the name of the content and the date of the violation to ensure they have better clarity about what content is being actioned on."

Twitch then provided an example of what such a notice might look like. This fictitious streamer apparently spammed "violative video content," which can include either copyrighted materials or creating an account solely to rebroadcast someone else's videos/streams. There's clearly still some grounds for confusion as there's a wide gulf between uploading copyrighted materials and rebroadcasting someone else's stuff.

What's less confusing follows the explanation. Twitch's example provides a specific video/stream title and date when the violative content was posted, so at least banned streamers will have something to examine to see what they did wrong.

This new policy would have been especially useful for Dr. Disrespect, whose ban remains a mystery even over a year after it was handed down. We're still not sure what he did that warranted a lifetime ban, but whatever it was, it was heinous enough that even merely looking like Dr. Disrespect managed to get Zlaner suspended from the Twitch Rivals tournament (although that ban was later rescinded as an overreaction).

In other Twitch news, it's cheaper to get Twitch subscriptions in the UK and Ireland thanks to pricing adjustments that take into account local currencies. The rest of the world can expect similar adjustments in the near future.
