Tetris 99’s Next Maximus Cup Introduces A Mario Golf Super Rush Theme

Leave it to Nintendo to release random updates for its games at inauspicious times. Announced last night on YouTube, Tetris 99 (the best battle royale game around) will be getting a Mario Golf Super Rush theme this weekend. As part of the 22nd Maximus Cup event, players will be tasked with earning 100 points from various matches to unlock the new theme on their consoles. The event will run from July 9 (at 11:59 pm PT) until July 12, after which the theme will be put into the game's shop and will require players to use tickets to obtain it.

While not a dramatic content drop or anything, it's fun that Nintendo still uses Tetris 99 to promote its latest titles. Just a few weeks ago, a theme based on Miitopia was released as part of the 21st Maximus Cup. Nintendo really loves not advertising these things, but I did happen to catch it at the last minute. It's never hard to find matches in Tetris 99, even if the fervor around the title has died down over the last few years.

What's more surprising is that Pac-Man 99 hasn't received any kind of substantial update since being released earlier in the year. The interesting, if flawed, battle royale did launch with a plethora of paid DLC, but Nintendo has seemingly walked away from further support. Maybe that has to do with Bandai Namco being the developer, but you'd think the Big N would want to promote its latest Switch Online freebie over an older one.

Whatever the reason, I'll be sure to jump onto Tetris 99 this weekend to unlock the new theme. Seeing as how I can actually win matches, it may not take very long for me to be done.
