Watch: Resident Evil Remake Fan Creates Playable First-Person Mode In Unreal Engine 4

Capcom’s decision to repurpose Resident Evil as a primarily first-person affair back in 2017 has paid off in spades. The acclaimed survival horror franchise is arguably as popular today as ever, with the latest installment, Village, having sold millions of copies within its first month of launch and showing no signs of slowing down. Naturally, the shift in perspective has prompted many fans to wonder how earlier entries in the series would feel to play from a fresh point of view (figuratively and literally), especially the original.

While the series creator seemingly has no current plans to retroactively reimagine the classics this way – recent remakes have all retained the third-person, over-the-shoulder camera popularized by Resident Evil 4 – indie developers have opted to take on such a task themselves, with impressive results.

In an effort to test their own project’s lighting tech, MoonGlint has purpose-built a portion of the iconic Spencer Mansion from scratch. While it’s unclear just how many of the assets used have been lifted directly from the official version, audio files, including music and sound effects, appear to be the real deal, so to speak. As for the zombie-infested mansion itself, peeling wallpaper, blood-stained carpets and crooked paintings all coalesce to perfectly mimic the original game’s atmosphere. While the footage above is only representative of a very small portion of Spencer’s former home, MoonGlint notes that should they receive enough support from fans via crowdfunding website Ko-fi, a fully playable prototype could be made available to the public at a later date.
