Watch The Terrifying Teaser For Midnight Mass From The Creator Of The Haunting Of Hill House

Mike Flanagan is back and his new show seems scarier than ever before. Netflix recently dropped a short teaser for his anticipated new series, Midnight Mass that evokes a sinister sensation. The teaser starts with showcasing what appears to be a very still and wholesome community, which only further adds to the suspense that keeps gradually building throughout the duration of the clip. As soon as the teaser portrays this tiny island community as quite angelic and pure, it is matched with cryptic, dark messages.

A spooky story always seems to start out with a sense of curiosity. This may be why the characters in scary movies keep searching for clues, or opening doors, even though they know that they are walking right into fear. The teaser starts with an almost premonition, presenting the unknown as almost a character in itself. The synopsis of the series reads, “The tale of a small, isolated island community whose existing divisions are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man ( Zack Gilford ) and the arrival of a charismatic priest.”

The audience sees clips of Gilford’s character lying in bed, seeing visions of a ghostly woman and blood in the sink. As the urge to understand darkness and to figure out why this is all happening, even more unfolds. Gilford’s character is confronted with hollow figures knocking on his window and what appears to be him performing an exorcism. Flanagan told Rolling Stone that Midnight Mass is his favorite project so far and that may be due to the fact that the storyline is somewhat personal to his own life.

As a child, Flanagan was an altar boy and struggled with drug addiction. Flanagan draws more attention to the symbolism of light versus dark. He said, “There is darkness at work on Crockett Island. Some of it is supernatural, but the scariest is born of human nature. The darkness that animates this story isn’t hard to see in our own world, unfortunately. But this show is about something else as well, faith itself. How even in the darkness, in the worst of it, in the absence of light – and – we sing.”

The series only consists of seven episodes, but fans will be excited to know that many familiar faces in Flanagan’s other series are also making an appearance. Former stars from The Haunting Of Hill House and Bly Manor such as Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, and Henry Thomas will be returning – and the list trails on and on from there. It will also be interesting to see Flanagan working in the realm of an original tale, as much of his recent work has adapted other people's stories.

Midnight Mass is available for streaming on Netflix, September 24th.
