Missives play an important role in Legendary Armor crafting in World of Warcraft's Shadowlands expansion, and players will be instructed to collect two of them as part of The Final Pieces quest. That said, some fans may be uncertain about what the different Missives are, and this can make obtaining them quite difficult. Fortunately, Missives in World of Warcraft are a fairly straightforward item, and this guide has all of the details that players will need.
Updated August 2, 2021 by Mina Smith: Missives are not made in a vacuum in Shadowlands, and there are tons of other aspects of creating Legendary Armor than just the Missives themselves. Therefore, this article felt a little incomplete without some references to farming Soul Ash and some of the other bits needed to complete the Final Pieces. Without Missives, players will not be able to choose their secondary stats for their armor, but without everything else, there would be no armor to have those stats.
Missives in Shadowlands dictate the secondary stats of a crafted piece of Legendary Armor, and there are four different options. Their names should provide a good sense of the secondary stats that they will bestow when crafting Legendary Armor. Just for full clarity, a WoW player that is interested in Critical Strike and Haste, as examples, would want to pickup the two associated Missives.

There are four types of missives in Shadowlands.
- Missive of Haste – Guarantees Haste
- Missive of Critical Strike – Guarantees Critical Strike
- Missive of Versatility – Guarantees Versatility
- Missive of Mastery – Guarantees Mastery
All missives are created by Shadowlands crafters. More specifically, players that have leveled up Inscription are the ones that can create Missives. Checking the Auction House is a good option for fans that need Missives but have not taken that profession. All four Missives are crafted with Luminous Ink, Umbral Ink, Tranquil Ink, and Dark Parchment, though the requisite quantities of these reagents varies.
To note, Missives are just one part of completing The Final Pieces quest and crafting a piece of Legendary Armor in World of Warcraft. Indeed, players will also need to obtain a Rune Vessel in Shadowlands, which are the items that Missives bestow their stats upon. When obtaining these Rune Vessels, players should be careful to select those that will create the exact pieces of armor that they are interested in, as there are different Vessels associated with the four types of armor and the various armor slot.
Finally, players will need a Runecarver Memory before they can create Legendary Armor. These take the form of Legendary recipes. These recipes can be obtained from bosses, reputation vendors, and beyond, and they grant a range of powerful effects. Of all of the work that players must do to craft Legendary Armor in Shadowlands, obtaining the best Runecarver Memories is likely to be the most intensive, but it will certainly be worth the effort.
