WWE 2K22 has reportedly been completely rebuilt since the launch of the last game in the series. That's according to those close to the game.
WWE 2K's main series returns later this year after going on hiatus in 2020. WWE 2K20 was riddled with all sorts of technical problems, resulting in a lot of backlash and one of the lowest Metacritic scores in 2K's history. Development of WWE 2K21 was canceled and the studio filled the gap with spinoff game WWE 2K Battlegrounds.
Its regularly scheduled slate returns later this year though, and the team behind the series needs to deliver something incredibly special to make up for 2K20. According to Forbes' Brian Mazique, all signs currently point to that being the case. Mazique has been told by those with a knowledge of work on 2K22 that its gameplay is fantastic.

“That is actually the word that was used for the latest build. The people who were playing the latest build have said the gameplay is fantastic,” Mazique said on his YouTube channel. “I have been told that the game is playing fantastic and that the gameplay engine is completely rebuilt.” Mazique also notes he had been told WWE 2K22 will have much cleaner controls compared to previous games in the series.
“Now, what cleaner means, I don’t know, but the last thing that I heard about this… is that this feels like a wrestling fan’s wrestling game.” Most fans of wrestling games will likely tell you it has been a while since anything from the genre has felt that way. Maybe even going back as far as SmackDown: Here Comes The Pain, or WWF No Mercy on the Nintendo 64.
Speaking of which, WWE 2K will have serious competition on the video game front for the first time in decades, perhaps as soon as next year. AEW is hard at work on its very first video game alongside Yuke's which has worked on a lot of WWE games in the past. Kenny Omega has spoken publicly about AEW's first game being inspired by titles like No Mercy, ensuring anticipation is incredibly high.
