Zelda: Skyward Sword Graveyard Puzzle Batreaux Guide

Skyloft is one of the interesting settings in The Legend of Zelda. An island floating high up in the sky, Skyloft is your central hub in Skyward Sword. You’ll be returning here often, both as part of the story and simply to customize Link’s adventure pouch after the Bazaar. Skyloft is also one of the few areas in Skyward Sword you can actually explore at night, a change of pace for 3D Zelda.

Skyloft is home to several side quests that award you with Gratitude Crystals, Skyward Sword’s main collectible (think the Golden Skulltula Tokens from Ocarina of Time). There are a total of 80 Gratitude Crystals in Skyward Sword that can be redeemed for rewards at Batreaux. Getting to Batreaux is easier said than done, however. While Batreaux lives in Skyloft, you’ll need to solve the graveyard puzzle before you can actually meet him.

The Lost Child

Before you can solve the graveyard puzzle and meet Batreaux, you need to trigger The Lost Child side quest. Head up to Skyloft to see Wyrna by one of the Goddess Statues. Speak with her to learn that her child has gone missing and she’ll task you with finding her. From here, leave Skyloft and fly towards Pumpkin Landing.

Enter the Lumpy Pumpkin and talk to the older patron to learn about a monster that’s terrorizing Skyloft. With this information, you can now return to Skyloft. Head to your bed, sleep until nightfall, and then make your way towards the graveyard. Your conversation with the old man at the Lumpy Pumpkin will now allow you to solve the puzzle.

The Graveyard Puzzle

Once you’ve made it to the Skyloft graveyard, kill any enemies in sight and then walk up to the headstone closest to the tree directly behind the lit torch. Strike the headstone with your sword and a symbol will appear before unlocking a gate with a ladder that leads down below. Climb down and follow the path until you reach a house.

Once inside, Link will be confronted by what appears to be a demon but is actually the friendly Batreaux. It turns out Wyrna’s daughter has been hanging out with Batreaux at night. Now that the mystery is solved, return to your bed, sleep until daytime, and then speak with Wyrna to get 5 Gratitude Crystals. Now go back to bed until night, return to Batreaux, and speak with him to unlock the Medium Wallet upgrade.
