Borderlands 2 SHIFT Code Gets Players 5 Golden Keys | Game Rant

It's nearing two years since Gearbox Entertainment released Borderlands 3, with the looter shooter receiving four major DLC expansions and a diverse range of additional content. Gearbox has now moved on to the development of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, leaving a space between the end of new Borderlands 3 content and the start of something new. That leaves plenty of time for fans to revisit Borderlands 2, which Gearbox is encouraging with a new code for 5 free Borderlands 2 golden keys.

In a tweet shared via the official Borderlands Twitter account, Gearbox dropped a new SHiFT key for players to use to redeem 5 golden keys for Borderlands 2. The code for redemption is "5JKT3-6XB5H-3J6B9-BJJ3T-SW9KK" and it can be redeemed via the official SHiFT Gearbox website. For new users, an account is required in order to connect players' SHiFT account to their game, so that the golden keys can be delivered via in-game mail. The new SHiFT code will expire on August 23.

For those unfamiliar with the golden key system in the Borderlands franchise, they're basically opportunities to open an in-game loot box that rewards gear. Loot is typically purple or magenta rarity, so the keys can be quite rewarding. The loot is scaled to the level of the players, so they're best used when a player hits max level or if a player is desperate for an upgrade. Once a key is used, it's consumed, making these rare offerings high in demand.

The Borderlands Twitter account typically shares new codes for golden keys every week on Friday. Last week, the account shared a code Borderlands Game of the Year golden keys. The week before that Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford shared a code for Borderlands 3 keys. Then the week before that the key was for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel golden keys. The account rotates through all of the Borderlands games now that Borderlands 3 active development has come to an end.

While Gearbox has gone to great lengths to say that its upcoming game Tiny Tina's Wonderlands isn't a Borderlands game, don't be surprised to see golden keys return for its release. Gearbox uses golden keys to maintain engagement through its social media channels, like keeping Randy Pitchford's Twitter followers from leaving because of his magic tricks.

All in all, Gearbox's weekly golden key deliveries make for a great excuse to revisit classic Borderlands games like Borderlands 2. Players can jump into an old save with a character that hasn't reached max level, gear them out with golden key chest loot, play until they get bored, and then wait for more golden keys. There's a long wait until Tiny Tina's Wonderlands arrives, after all.

Borderlands 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
