Bungie's Destiny 2 showcase has come with a plethora of new information regarding the game's future, including the announcement of a final DLC after Lightfall: The Final Shape.
Bungie has spoiled us with a massive amount of new content coming to Destiny 2. The most surprising of all these announcements, however, is a final DLC for the game after Lightfall. This new DLC, titled The Final Shape, is to be the final release for Destiny 2's current stoyrline, culminating over seven years' worth of story-telling in one final crescendo before departing from the Light and Darkness Saga.

According to Bungie, The Final Shape will be a "transformative moment" for Destiny 2. There was nothing referencing the newly announced DLC in The Witch Queen leaks that were released in the days leading up to the showcase with the exception of hints of content beyond Lightfall. The announcement of another full-fledged DLC is welcomed news.
There is still quite a long way to go before we see The Final Shape. The Witch Queen releases on February 22, 2022, with Light Fall likely coming at some point in the first half of 2023. So, it's not unreasonable to assume we won't be seeing The Final Shape in the flesh until well into 2023, if not 2024.
There was a specific focus put on Bungie's "transformative state" comment from the showcase. We can take this to mean a number of different things. On a fundamental level, we can assume that the comment is in reference to the state of the Destiny 2 world before the launch of Destiny 3, similar to what Bungie did with Destiny 1and The Taken King. However, a line of thinking that should be explored is the possibility of Destiny 2 becoming a full-fledged live-service game. Players have discussed at length the benefits and downsides of Destiny releasing new titles, rather than building on a singular world more akin to something like World of Warcraft. Pushing D2 to a "transformative state" could therefore mean having the game simply becoming "Destiny," with all future updates being launched off of that title without the need for another entry in the franchise.
Of course, this is all conjecture. With The Final Shape being at least two years off, don't expect to hear anything more about it anytime soon. It's always fun to speculate, though.
Destiny 2 is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
