Amazon’s New World Just Fried Gladd’s RTX 3090

The beta for Amazon's upcoming New World is live, but it's having an unwanted adverse effect on people's very expensive graphics cards.

Amazon managed to successfully send a man into space this week. It has a hugely successful streaming platform, and its delivery service is so widespread the word Amazon is effectively a synonym for receiving a parcel at this point. However, Jeff Bezos and co. are determined to make a mark on the video game world too. Its next attempt will be via the ambitious MMO title, New World.

The beta for New World has already begun, and anyone who has preordered a copy has access to it. The trouble is, some of those to have played it have paid the price for doing so, and we're not talking about the cost of the game. Multiple reports are surfacing online that playing New World is rendering RTX 3090 graphics cards obsolete.

A number of New World players have reported the pretty major issue, with one of the more notable names to have been affected being streamer Gladd. “Playing the New World beta on my EVGA 3090 has fried my graphics card completely. There are many accounts of this same thing happening with the same card with the same game,” Gladd tweeted. They also shared a forum where others have been reporting the same issue.

This is no minor problem. Not only are RTX 3090 cards incredibly expensive, but thanks to the ongoing global semiconductor shortage, they also remain very hard to come by. That means even if you are able to obtain a refund should New World brick your card, you may well be waiting an indefinite amount of time before you can get your hands on a new one.

New World was actually supposed to have launched by now, but as has been the case with many games over the course of the past year or more, that launch was delayed. It is now slated to hit PCs on August 31, 2021. The beta is obviously a chance for Amazon to flag any issues and iron them out before the end of next month. The game bricking $1500 graphics cards is a pretty major wrinkle that will need to be addressed very quickly.
