Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – Season 5 Zombies Content Explained

While many Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies fans are still having a good time on Mauer Der Toten, they will soon have even more content to play around with. Season 5 launches on August 12, and while it is too soon for a new Survival map, the next big update will bring just about every other form of content for players to enjoy. Alongside the cross-mode additions like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s new Operators and weapons, a ton of Zombies-specific content is incoming.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies is bringing a new perk in Season 5, and it should be familiar to fans of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Zombies mode. A new Field Upgrade and killstreak are both inbound, as is some PlayStation exclusive content. Outbreak is getting a massive number of additions, ranging from a new Region to a fresh objective and extra intel. Here is what players can expect from all the Zombies content dropping on August 12.

For some time now, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies fans have felt confident that they know which perks will be coming to the game. This is because of a leak that happened shortly after launch, with four perk jingles appearing in the game’s code. The addition of two of these leaked perks, Mule Kick and Tombstone, only made it seem more likely that the full set would be complete. However, it seems like either Double Tap or PhD Flopper has been scrapped, as a different perk is coming in Season 5.

With Treyarch’s Season 5 blog post talking about how the developer is seeking to add balanced perks, the powerful Double Tap seems like most likely candidate to be left on the cutting room floor. Regardless, what is coming is Death Perception, a perk from Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies. Its main purpose remains the same, as it outlines enemies through walls. Another one of its features returns via the perk upgrade tiers, with players once again able to detect enemies sneaking up behind them. The full list of Death Perception tiers is as follows.

  • Perk Tier 1: Minimap update rate is increased.
  • Perk Tier 2: Enemies give danger indicators when attacking from behind.
  • Perk Tier 3: Players gain 20% more looted salvage.
  • Perk Tier 4: Armor Penetration damage increased by 10%.
  • Perk Tier 5: Nearby chests, resources & item drops are outlined through walls.

While Death Perception’s leaked tiers make it seem particularly useful in Outbreak mode, Tesla Storm should be strong in all kinds of Zombies content. Coating players in electricity, the Field Upgrade will shine in co-op play, as lightning chaining between players. While it will stun regular enemies in its normal form, the upgraded version will stun mini bosses and provide a boost to movement speed. With some strong upgrades like Ring of Fire and Aether Shroud already available, it will be interesting to see if Tesla Storm is worthwhile.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Flamethrower is not only coming to multiplayer in Season 5, but Zombies as well. Described as being a bit better than the Combat Bow, the killstreak should prove to be a lot of fun to use against large groups of the undead. It will likely cost somewhere around 200 blue salvage, though this price is purely speculation and has not been confirmed.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies fans will also be able to make another type of equipment, though this item will not be lethal. Instead, players will be able to equip a grapple gun inside of Outbreak, with the tool making traversal a whole lot quicker for players. With Death Perception’s tiers supposedly providing more salvage, these two items give players something to spend the currency on.

Zombies Onslaught and Dead Ops Arcade 3 will both be getting some fresh content in Season 5. In the case of the former, the new multiplayer map Echelon will become playable, with a limited time mode set to debut in Season 5 Reloaded. For Dead Ops Arcade 3, a new bonus map called Ikari EggXit will be added during Season 5. With the PlayStation exclusive Onslaught having improved heavily since launch, and Dead Ops Arcade still being underrated, these additions are welcome.

As was the case with Season 2 and Season 3, Outbreak is the focus of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season 5. Alongside some fresh story intel, Zombies fans will be able to explore a whole new region come August 12. Intriguingly, it brings players away from the Ural Mountains, as Collateral is instead set in the Algerian Desert. With sand on the ground and a storm looming in the sky, it looks a lot more varied visually than the other Outbreak maps that have appeared thus far.

Alongside an exciting new Outbreak region, players will be able to complete a new objective for Requiem. Called Transport, it seems similar to Escort in the sense that players will have to move a vehicle from point A to point B without it being destroyed. However, the big difference this time around is that the vehicle in question is drivable — meaning that a group will need to protect the player behind the wheel as they move across the map. With this being the first time in a while that a fresh objective has been added to Outbreak, fans should be happy to have a bit more variety.

Finally, Outbreak will be giving players a tank to mess around with. It will be interesting to see how Treyarch balances this new vehicle, as it is shown battling an Orda boss in an official screenshot. Assuming that it is as strong as one would expect, players could push through regions with ease. Even if it does make things a bit easy, controlling such a powerful vehicle could turn out to be a whole lot of fun. With so many new things to see, Season 5 seems like the time to jump back into Outbreak for those who need a break from Mauer Der Toten.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
