Right now, all eyes are on LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga to announce a release date and show off more content. It was most recently indefinitely delayed, and only a small glimpse into the game's development has shown through a recent dev's comment on making Rise of Skywalker content for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. However, it's far from the only LEGO Star Wars game out there, and many may have missed out on one that flew under the radar: LEGO Star Wars Battles.
The latter is a PvP mobile game, and despite having a ton of information out there about it, it's an easy Star Wars game to miss. It's not LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, but LEGO Star Wars Battles was a game that could have scratched that familiar itch. Unfortunately, the first some may be hearing of it is its cancellation.

"Released" as a beta in 2020, players would learn an army of LEGO Star Wars characters in PvP tower defense-style arenas. Players would be able to build and upgrade these armies, using different combinations of units and building to utilize both light and dark side armies. The key difference between it and most tower-based games is that it wasn't just about defense, as these towers could defend the base, advance the battlefield, and be used in an offensive manner. A couple of examples include a Droid Factory to build armies or a Turbolazer to shoot down airborne vehicles, such as Y-Wings and Tie Fighters.
Iconic Star Wars characters like Darth Vader could also use special abilities in combat. For Vader, he could Force Slam enemies and stop them in their tracks. Utilizing these abilities in conjunction with the right troops and towers was a key strategy for success, no matter what era of Star Wars it was played in. It feature the Iconic battles of Naboo, Scarif, and far more, just to name a couple. Overall, it was an ambitious LEGO Star War game and one fitting for the mobile space. However, since it never received a proper release, perhaps the writing was on the wall.
In May 2020, players received an in-game message that LEGO Star Wars Battles would be shutting down, and per the above message, it was done so on July 1. Unfortunately, this means no one can download it, many people lost the variety of hours put into the game, and a lot of people may feel upset. After all, for those who did enjoy the game, that could be a lost of time wasted with no explanation.
Neither developer TT Games Odyssey nor publisher Playdemic have commented as to why, which is odd all things considered. TT Games expanded into the mobile games market with the acquisition of Playdemic in February 2017 with TT Odyssey being opened in January 2018. There could be a variety of reasons, such as the pandemic, needing resources moved elsewhere, or something with Warner Bros since TT Games is a subsidiary. Overall, fans may never know, but it'll be interesting to see what happens next.
LEGO Star Wars Battles has been cancelled.
