Sony recently made the surprising announcement that it will be hosting a PlayStation Showcase on September 9. What is immediately obvious to fans is this is a bigger event than what many were hoping for or even expecting. The last major Sony showcase was the reveal of the PS5 in 2020, and now it seems fans should be expecting something on that level.
It does remain to be seen what all Sony shows there, but for those excited for the event, here’s everything that has been revealed so far. Confirmed details are slim, but there are other elements too that fans want to keep in mind.

PlayStation Showcase Date and Time
The PlayStation Showcase is slated for September 9 at 1 PM PT/4 PM ET. Fans should allow roughly 40 minutes for the show, which will showcase many PS5 games from developers “large and small.” First-party PlayStation Studios are confirmed to be there, but which studios remains a big question.
PlayStation Showcase – What Won’t Be There
While this may not be a State of Play—in fact, it seems much larger than the standard State of Play—Sony has once again managed expectations by stating what won’t be there. For example, Sony confirmed that the last State of Play would not have God of War or Horizon ahead of time, preventing fans from getting their hopes up.
That particular tidbit is interesting, as Sony has only confirmed one thing that won’t be at the PlayStation Showcase 2021: PSVR 2. Many are no doubt excited for that too, so it’s a good choice in terms of managing expectations, but that leaves a wide window in terms of what PS5 games could appear.
PlayStation Showcase PS5 Games
Sony’s only official confirmation on the PS5 games that will be there is that they are releasing “this holiday and beyond.” Anything else, including information here, is speculation. Looking at Sony’s fall/holiday 2021 games, it seems likely that Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Deathloop, and Death Stranding will make some appearance there, while Solar Ash and Jett: The Far Shore may be too. Of course, those 5 releases are not going to eat up 40 minutes.
As such, it’s not impossible that Sony announces something new for the holiday—though it is unlikely. Instead, it’s likely a good chunk of the presentation will focus on other details about hardware and third-party games, but 2022 is likely to be a big focus over that. It stands to reason Horizon Forbidden West will be there, and God of War has already leaked for the PlayStation Showcase. To manage expectations, it’s worth reiterating again that nothing game-related is confirmed, but it is interesting that Sony did not say God of War wouldn’t be there.
At the end of the day, there’s a lot that could appear there but not everything will be. Everything from Abandoned to Final Fantasy 16 news could finally come to light, but in a 40-minute showcase, it seems like there will be more information than there won’t be. Even if every game got a 3-minute trailer, which is unlikely, that’s 13 games. Anything less means more games than that are shown, and it’s likely some games will get just a minute or two while others get 5-6. The bottom line is simple: PlayStation fans should tune in on September 9 and have their wish lists ready.
