GTA 5 Has Now Sold More Than 150 Million Copies

Take-Two has revealed GTA 5 has now shipped more than 150 million copies, up from 145 million just three months ago.

Grand Theft Auto 5 will officially arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S later this year. The enhanced and expanded versions of the game will mean GTA 5 will have officially launched on three different consoles. GTA Online, which is arguably the reason the game continues to thrive eight years on from its initial launch, will also be available to buy separately.

Despite a next-gen version of the game hitting the market just three months from now, people continue to buy GTA 5 in their droves. So much so that Take-Two Interactive revealed via its 2022 Q1 earnings results that the game has now surpassed 150 million copies sold. That solidifies its place as the second best-selling game of all time behind Minecraft. Both titles are in the top ten best-sellers on a weekly basis.

The reveal that GTA 5 has now shipped more than 150 million copies worldwide comes less than three months after Take-Two revealed its game had hit the 145 million mark. That means it has sold at least five million more copies during the last three months alone. A period during which a new version of the game was not released, nor was there a holiday that would have warranted a spike in sales.

At the end of this year, Take-Two and GTA 5 will have both of those things playing in their favor. Not to mention how many more people will have new consoles by that point, or will be receiving ones over the holidays. It could be argued that everyone who wants a copy of GTA 5 has one by now, but that clearly isn't the case. There could even be another wave of people waiting for the enhanced version of the game later this year, not to mention those who already own the game who will be picking up a next-gen copy.

Take-Two had plenty more to brag about during its earnings report. That GTA 5 hit $1 billion in sales quicker than any other in history, and that it's the best-selling game of the decade in the US. It also confirmed the enhanced version of GTA 5 is on track to meet its November release date.
