The one and only Spider-Man has, at long last, joined Fortnite, but you can’t play as him straight away.

It was always weird that Spider-Man wasn’t part of Fortnite’s Marvel themed season earlier last year. He’s here now, but as part of the new season’s battle pass – meaning you can’t just buy him straight from the in-game item store.

With Chapter 3 marking a new era of Fortnite, and Spider-Man being such a popular character, chances are there are plenty of new people trying it out for the first time.

So, not only will we explain what to do to unlock Spider-Man, but we’ll share a quick primer on how the battle pass works.

Fortnite Chapter 3: how to unlock Spider-Man

As it stands, Spider-Man is easily the biggest draw of the current season. This means that he’s one of the last rewards you’re going to unlock from the battle pass, with his skin and other related content on page nine.

While this does mean you don’t have to worry about completing specific quests or anything, it means you’ve got to play a lot of Fortnite to even reach page nine.

This is because you can’t move to the next page of a battle pass until you’ve unlocked everything on the previous page. You want Spider-Man, you’ve got to blitz through eight other pages first and that requires battle stars.

Fortnite: how to get the battle pass

Before that, however, you’ll need to purchase the battle pass itself. While there is a free battle pass, it only contains a handful of rewards, none of which are the fancy new skins.

To get the premium battle pass that has Spider-Man in it, you can buy it from the item shop for 950 V-Bucks (the in-game currency). You can earn V-Bucks from both the premium and free battle passes, but if you’re a brand new player who’s only just started you’ll need to either grind more V-Bucks through completing quests or buy them with actual money since the free pass alone won’t earn you enough (it only contains 300 V-Bucks). For the record, 1000 V-Bucks cost £6.49.

Fortnite: how to get battle stars

You earn battle stars as you level up in Fortnite, which you do by gaining XP just through playing matches and completing quests. For every level up, you get five of them, with the battle pass rewards costing from between two to nine battle stars.

However, each page has 10 rewards to unlock and, when all added together, that makes 398 stars you need to earn and spend before you even get to Spider-Man. If the idea of playing that much Fortnite is unappealing to you, the alternative is to buy levels.

One level up will cost you 150 V-Bucks. Since you need 80 levels to get enough battle stars to reach page nine, that’s an additional 12,000 V-Bucks you must be willing to spend money on.

Alternatively, you can purchase the battle bundle for 1,850 V-Bucks, which will come with the first 25 levels already unlocked (so 125 battle stars). Regardless, you’ll need to sink either time or money to get Spider-Man.

Once you do reach page nine, Spider-Man will cost nine battle stars to unlock. You’ll also be able to get a Web-Head’s Knapsack cosmetic for five battle stars, a Spidey themed emoticon for three battle stars, and a contrail for four, plus an emote that seems to reference the Spider-Man pointing meme for seven battle stars.

Fortnite: how to unlock Spider-Man symbiote suit

Venom was already added to Fortnite ages ago, but you can deck Spider-Man out in his classic black symbiote suit as well if you want. The suit is on page 10 of the battle pass so unlock everything on page nine (51 battle stars) and you can then purchase the symbiote suit for eight battle stars.

If you’re wondering where the white Future Foundation suit shown in one of the new Fortnite trailers is, it doesn’t appear to have been added to the game yet. It will likely either be added to the battle pass, or the in-game shop, later in the season.

Fortnite is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
