Humankind has had a long and troubled development, but now fans can rejoice that it is coming to Game Pass day one when it launches later this year.
This historical, turn-based strategy game has been announced for some time, but has been hit with a variety of delays. Last year it was announced that Humankind was being delayed into spring of 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as many other games had to do, but was later pushed back even further to this summer. The game is reminiscent of other strategy titles like Civilization, where the player controls factions throughout history, interacting with notable figures, and conquering lands, if they so desire. However, Humankind features a semi-different tone that is not too focused on historical accuracy, but rather ambitiously rewriting it as the player sees fit.

A new post on Xbox Wire has confirmed that Humankind will be launching Day One on Xbox Game Pass for both its PC users. Since its announcement, the game was confirmed to be coming to the Epic Games Store, Steam, and Google Stadia, but now Game Pass users can get it included as part of their subscription. So that it is not misconstrued, though, the game is coming to PC Game Pass users only, meaning Humankind will not be available for console players. Regardless, with Humankind, the list of day one Game Pass games keeps getting bigger and bigger.
PC Game Pass users have often felt they are being short ended with Xbox's service. Besides having less available games to select from in the library, an even tinier selection of those games are only playable on PC. Recent Game Pass titles have been dropping on both console and PC, but with Humankind, it is one of the rare new titles coming exclusively to PC. Releasing more titles that are exclusive to PC is a good way in making Game Pass a better service for those users.
What will be interesting now is to see how Humankind performs across the major PC game retailers. As of April, there were over 23 million people subscribed to Game Pass, across both console and PC users, demonstrating just how popular the Xbox service is. If just a fraction of those players try out Humankind, then that could potentially be millions of people playing—but just how many of them will stick around and actually buy the game? This has been the ongoing investigation with Game Pass, how it reflects on sales and player data, and Humankind is going to be the next great example of this situation.
Humankind launches August 17, 2021 on PC and Stadia.
