Minecraft: Guide To Every Nether Biome

Quick Links

The Nether is a treacherous place in Minecraft, especially after the 1.16 update back in the summer of 2020. With this update, the Nether was completely expanded, adding a variety of new mobs and blocks. In this guide, we are going to go over every biome that you can find in the Nether, as well as mineable blocks and mobs that will be present.

Keep in mind, the Nether can be dangerous. When exploring these biomes, be as cautious as possible. If you plan on doing mining, make sure to have blocks at the ready in case you come across lava. Lava moves faster in the Nether, and can easily burn you to a crisp. Be sure to bring good armor, food, and blocks to help you avoid any dangerous situation.

Nether Wastes

This is the most common biome that you will find in the Nether. Prior to the 1.16 Nether update, this was also the only biome available. Nether Wastes are primarily made of netherrack, and often have lava seas extending far into the distance. First, let's take a look at all the material that can be gathered in this biome.

  • Netherrack
  • Glowstone
  • Nether Quartz
  • Nether Gold (ore)
  • Magma Blocks
  • Gravel
  • Blackstone
  • Soul Sand
  • Ancient Debris
  • Mushrooms (red and brown)

This common biome will also have a chance to contain a Nether Fortress and Bastion Remnants. These are two fortresses structured that are filled with enemies and rare loot.

Below, let's look at every mob that can spawn in this biome.

Mob Type Potential Drops
Zombified Piglin
  • 0-1 Rotten Flesh
  • 0-1 Gold Nugget
  • 2.5% chance for Gold Ingot
  • 8.5% chance for current Weapon
Magma Cube
  • 0-1 Magma Cream
Enderman
  • 0-1 Ender Pearls
Piglin
  • 8.5% chance for current Weapon
Ghast
  • 0-1 Ghast Tears
  • 0-2 Gunpowder

Overall, this is a very simple biome to navigate and you will definitely know once you have entered one. The distinct lack of scenery gives this biome away.

Soul Sand Valley

Soul Sand Valley's are the Nether equivalent to the desert. Rather than the typical red fire you find in the Nether, a Soul Sand Valley will have blue flames. This is a unique feature of the soul sand block, which can also be crafted into blue campfires and torches. Below, you can find a complete list of all blocks available in this biome.

  • Soul Sand
  • Soul Soil
  • Bone Block
  • Glowstone
  • Blackstone
  • Gravel
  • Netherrack
  • Basalt
  • Ancient Debris
  • Mushrooms (red and brown)

A Soul Sand Valley will also generate with 'fossil' structures made out of bone blocks. This structure is unique to the valley biome and can appear with a few different shape variations. In addition to these fossils, you can find both Nether Fortresses and Bastion Remnants in the Soul Sand Valley. Lastly, let's take a look at mobs that spawn in this biome.

Mob Type Potential Drops
Skeleton
  • 0-2 Bones
  • 0-2 Arrows
  • Naturally Spawned Equipment
Ghast
  • 0-1 Ghast Tears
  • 0-2 Gunpowder
Enderman
  • 0-1 Ender Pearls

Crimson Forest

This newly added forest biome adds life to the otherwise desolate world. The Crimson Forest is one of the two forest varieties that you will find in the Nether. Here, you can chop down the tree-like crimson fungi. These are made out of crimson stems, which can then be crafted like wood, and have a beautiful pink color. Below, you can find every available block in the Crimson Forest.

  • Crimson Nylium
  • Netherrack
  • Crimson Stem
  • Nether Wart Block
  • Blackstone
  • Gravel
  • Shroomlight
  • Crimson Roots
  • Crimson Fungus
  • Weeping Vines
  • Ancient Debris
  • Mushrooms (red and brown)

Crimson fungi trees will grow from the small crimson fungus when planted on a crimson nylium block. This block is similar to netherrack with the addition of red grass on top. If you mine this block without a tool enchanted with Silk Touch, the block will revert back to normal netherrack. With Silk Touch though, you will be able to mine the nylium and even bring the block back to the overworld and plant more crimson fungus trees.

Similar to the previous biomes, you can find Nether Fortresses and bastion Remnants in the Crimson Forest.

Now, let's take a quick look at mobs that spawn in this biome. There are not that many, however, they can be quite deadly.

Mob Type Potential Drops
Zombified Piglin
  • 0-1 Rotten Flesh
  • 0-1 Gold Nugget
  • 2.5% chance for Gold Ingot
  • 8.5% chance for current Weapon
Piglin
  • 8.5% chance for current Weapon
Hoglin
  • 2-4 Raw Porkchops
  • 0-1 Leather

Warped Forest

The Warped Forest is our second forest biome in the Nether. This biome functions similarly to the Crimson Forest, with huge warped fungus trees that give a cyan-colored wood.

Let's look at every block in the Warped Forest below.

  • Warped Nylium
  • Netherrack
  • Warped Stem
  • Warped Wart Block
  • Blackstone
  • Gravel
  • Shroomlight
  • Warped Roots
  • Warped Fungus
  • Twisting Vines
  • Ancient Debris
  • Mushrooms (red and brown)

Growing warped fungus trees works exactly the same as crimson fungus trees; you will need to plant the fungus on a warped nylium block for it to grow. Along with the biomes above, you will be able to find Nether Fortresses and Bastion Remnants in the Warped Forest.

Only Endermen will spawn in this biome; making it relatively safe for exploring. Unlike Crimson Forests, Hoglins will not spawn here. Hoglins are afraid of warped fungi, which can be helpful for navigating around the Nether. Hoglins can be quite dangerous so if you are low health or don't have the best armor, try to find a Warped Forest.

Basalt Deltas

Lastly, we have Basalt Deltas. This is a volcano-like biome, filled with lava and ash particles that float through the air. There are fewer available blocks here compared to other biomes, so let's take a look at them below.

  • Basalt
  • Blackstone
  • Magma Block
  • Netherrack
  • Gravel
  • Ancient Debris
  • Mushrooms (red and brown)

Basalt Deltas may contain a Nether Fortress, but they will never generate with a Bastion Remnant. This is the only biome where you cannot find this structure.

Additionally, there are not many mobs that spawn here. Below, you can find the two mobs that spawn here, as well as what they drop.

Mob Type Potential Drops
Ghast 0-1 Magma Cream
Magma Cube 0-1 Magma Cream

Although there are only two mobs here, the terrain is still pretty dangerous. The chaotic layout of the blocks forms lava pools, sharp cliffs, and flat areas where Ghasts spawn.

That's every biome in the Nether! After visiting all five locations, you will earn the Hot Tourist Destination achievement/trophy.
