Resident Evil: The Depressing and Horrifying Backstory of Lisa Trevor Explained

Films in the Resident Evil universe have very loosely followed the existing canon established in the games, before expanding into its own world. However, the Resident Evil movie franchise is receiving a reboot film that aims to be more faithful to the story of the video game franchise than the other Resident Evil movies. Although Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is only a few months away from release, fans are yet to see a proper trailer.

Rather, the first official images of the upcoming film were released yesterday, showing characters such as Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, and Leon Kennedy. The photos also revealed a look at the infamous Spencer Mansion and what appears to be an underground area somewhere around Raccoon City. However, one particular image that caught the attention of some is that of a creepy monster, who veteran players of Resident Evil would know is Lisa Trevor.

The Dark Origins of Lisa Trevor

Although the upcoming reboot film is heavily influenced by the first two Resident Evil games, it is still unknown how faithful it will be. With that in mind, this article will contain spoilers of the events that transpired in the first Resident Evil game, which could potentially spoil the plot of the upcoming reboot film.

In the 2002 remake of Resident Evil, Capcom added a new enemy with Lisa Trevor. During the game's events, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine discovered that Lisa was the daughter of the mansion's architect George Trevor. The latter designed all the elaborate traps at the request of Dr. Oswell E. Spencer, one of Umbrella's founders.

However, given George Trevor's knowledge of the mansion's secrets, Spencer plotted to get rid of him by inviting him and his family to stay in the estate upon its completion. With George finding himself caught up with work, his wife Jessica and daughter Lisa drove ahead to the mansion where they planned to stay over the week until George's arrival.

Upon arriving at the Spencer Mansion, Jessica and Lisa were immediately taken to the underground laboratory, where they became test subjects for Umbrella's research on the Progenitor Virus. Days later, George arrives at the mansion where he was told that his wife and daughter had already left to take care of a sick relative. Spencer then held George prisoner within the estate, where he was forced to solve the very same puzzles and traps he designed. Unfortunately for George, he was outsmarted by Spencer and was left dying of starvation in the catacombs beneath the mansion.

Lisa Trevor's Fate in Resident Evil Remake

After being taken away as test subjects in the lab beneath the mansion, Jessica and Lisa were subjected to painful experiments, and both were injected with the initial strain of the Progenitor. Unfortunately, Jessica displayed no reaction to the virus and was quickly terminated by Umbrella.

As for Lisa, she began to mutate due to the Progenitor virus, leaving her body malformed and her mental state impaired. After being separated from her mother for so long, Lisa became so violent that researchers would disguise themselves as Jessica to appease her. However, all attempts to trick Lisa only resulted in the researchers being killed, with Lisa ripping off their faces and attaching them to her own body.

For decades, Lisa was locked beneath the Spencer Mansion and was continuously subjected to horrific experiments. Finally, in 1995, Umbrella researchers Albert Wesker and William Birkin implanted a newly developed parasite to Lisa that resulted in the cultivation of the G-Virus. After the G-Virus was extracted from Lisa's body, Umbrella's interest in her waned, and the company ordered her disposal. However, given the many years of experiments, Lisa's developed regenerative capabilities, making her immune to any form of physical assault.

After several attempts, Umbrella believed they successfully killed Lisa and dumped her body into the catacombs beneath the mansion. Unbeknownst to the researchers, Lisa was revived and lived in the catacombs without any contact with Umbrella's researchers. In 1998, during the events of the Mansion Incident, members of STARS encountered Lisa and failed to neutralize her.

However, Jill Valentine solved a puzzle in the crypt and opened the coffin that contained Lisa's mother, Jessica. Lisa recognized her mother by her scent and was even able to cry out, "Mother." After taking her mother's skull from the coffin, Lisa jumped into the dark abyss beneath the crypt, and Jill Valentine and Barry Burton thought she had been killed.

However, after STARS member Rebecca Chambers was able to activate the mansion's self-destruct sequence, Albert Wesker once again encountered Lisa Trevor, and she relentlessly pursued him all the way to the main hall. However, Wesker was able to shoot down a large chandelier from the ceiling that fell on Lisa before making his escape from the mansion. Lisa was apparently killed when the mansion exploded, but this was never seen on-screen.
