With over five years having passed since Overwatch was first released, there have been plenty of skins added to Blizzard’s hero shooter. Among the most popular are the outfits that depict the Overwatch heroes in their younger years, with many fans happy to see a new take on their favorite characters.
While players have enjoyed seeing a younger version of McCree, perhaps the most interesting skins of this kind are tied to Hanzo and Genji. Players can get a glimpse at how the Shimada brothers looked when they had their brutal fight, a clash that saw Hanzo believing that he had killed Genji in cold blood. Obviously, that was not the case, though the fight left Genji on the brink of death. Heavily scarred and injured, he was transformed into the iconic cyborg ninja that fans know and love.

While this is one of the darkest pieces of Overwatch lore, it is incredibly interesting, and Blizzard giving players the chance to see what Genji looked like before his transformation was a nice touch. Instagram user zaxiro97 is clearly fond of the "Sparrow" Genji appearance, as the fan has shared an incredible cosplay of the hero online. Quickly growing in popularity due to a Reddit post by the Genji cosplayer’s girlfriend, they are being shown the appreciation that they deserve for their hard work.
Genji fans should be familiar with both the sword and dagger wielded by the hero, with the former used in his ultimate and the latter serving as a way for him to deflect bullets back at foes. Both props have been used by the cosplayer to add to the quality of their photos, though they are only one piece of the puzzle. The cosplayer nails Genji’s hairstyle, with the jet-black color looking great against the silver headband. The wristguards are great, too, with rope used alongside the Shimada clan symbol to add some detail.
Alongside the original image, zaxiro97 has shared a few more looks at his Overwatch cosplay. One shows him staring head-on at the camera, with his sword readied and an intimidating look on his face. The other image shows the outfit from the back, letting fans get a clear idea of just how much effort went into bringing young Genji to life. Alongside the light green neck wrap, fans will be able to make out a dragon symbol on Genji’s back. A proper sword scabbard can be seen on Genji’s back as well, adding even more to the look.
While it is unclear where Genji’s story will go in Overwatch 2, zaxiro97 will surely be interested in the hero’s future. With such great work done on this young Genji cosplay, perhaps the fan will bring the sequel’s version of the character to life as well.
Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
