PlayStation has added a support page for the first wave of PS5 owners who will be testing the addition of M.2 SSDs to the console for additional storage.
Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are pretty remarkable consoles. However, if there is one issue that continues to worry many buying the new systems, it's storage. As games become better looking, longer, and more complex, the amount of storage needed to house them goes up too. However, the storage capabilities of the consoles on which those games are played doesn't appear to be increasing at the same rate.
The PS5, for example, has somewhere in the region of 667GB leftover for games once everything needed to actually run it is taken into consideration. With some games now clocking in at more than 100GB each, that's not really a lot of room. However, Sony has promised additional extended storage options are coming, and the first sign that those options are almost here has surfaced.

PlayStation has added a support page to its site for PS5 owners who plan on using an M.2 SSD to expand their consoles storage capabilities. The page directly addresses those who have access to the PS5's system software beta, a program launched earlier this year that you are still able to sign up for if you want to be the first to try out the console's potential new features.
The support page, which you can check out above, offers pointers to those who plan on giving the new storage option a try. Most of the support surrounds the need to have the PS5's system software beta installed. If you aren't a part of the beta and you're just running your PS5 as normal, installing an M.2 SSD at this moment in time will not add to your storage.

Hints that PlayStation would offer additional storage options were spotted before the PS5 had even hit the market. A system software update earlier this year added the ability to store PS5 games on an external storage device. Only PS4 games could be stored in that way prior to the update. Even though PS5 games can now be stored externally, they must be on the console's SSD if you want to play them.
