Skyward Sword: Gratitude Crystals Locations

Quick Links

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword introduced a new type of collectible item that we haven't seen since, sadly: Gratitude Crystals. These strange orange stones are the crystallized energy produced when someone is incredibly grateful, and Link can find them by doing nice things for people.

After collecting enough of them, Batreaux, a demon who lives below Skyloft, will reward Link with special items and even some money. There are 80 to collect in total — 65 from side quests and 15 hidden around the overworld. Whether you're playing the original version of the game, or Skyward Sword HD, here's everything you need to know about collecting these Gratitude Crystals, including where to find all of them.

Lost Child Side Quest

To start finding Gratitude Crystals, you'll first need to finish a particular side quest. This Lost Child quest is unlocked after you place the Ruby Tablet in the Statue of the Goddess — so, shortly after the first dungeon, Skyview Temple.

Once you exit the Statue, you'll find Wyrna, who is a bit distressed. Apparently, her daughter, Kukiel, has gone missing. She needs your help finding her. Here's a basic rundown of the quest steps:

  1. Talk to Wyrna to learn about Kukiel going missing
  2. Talk to the villagers for hints (this is optional)

    • In southeast Skyloft, you can find Orielle, who will tell you about a monster that's been kidnapping kids
    • At the Lumpy Pumpkin, you can talk to Rusta, who will tell you about a monster he saw entering the storage shed in the Skyloft graveyard
  3. Sleep in anyone's bed to make it nighttime
  4. Head to the graveyard and find the tombstone closest to the tree
  5. Whack the tombstone with your sword and it'll glow. Push or pull it to make the shed open
  6. Head inside the shed, down the ramp, and around to the place where you'll find both Kukiel and her friend, Batreaux!

    • You'll need to slash at Batreaux with your sword to initiate his dialogue, sadly. The poor guy is peaceful and gentle, but Link doesn't know that yet.
    • Batreaux will tell you that he and Kukiel are actually good friends. He'll also tell you about Gratitude Crystals, opening up the ability to start collecting them! By bringing them to Batreaux, you can earn some cool rewards.
  7. Head back to bed to make it morning, then speak with Wyrna again. She'll give you the first five Gratitude Crystals of your collection.
  8. Return to Batreaux and cash in your first batch of Gratitude Crystals for the Medium Wallet, which holds 500 rupees.

Now that you've finished this quest, you can start collecting the rest of the Gratitude Crystals. Some of the sidequests that award them are still locked behind some other requirements, but many are unlocked now. Next, let's look at where to find all of them, starting with the 15 you can just find lying around.

Gratitude Crystals Around Skyloft/The Sky

Most of the Gratitude Crystals you can find will be obtained during sidequests, but there are an additional 15 that can just be found here and there. They can only be found at night. Here's where you'll find each one:

Side Quests

There are 11 sidequests that have Gratitude Crystal rewards. All of them grant five Crystals, save for one, Missing Sister, which offers ten. We've already outlined the Lost Child quest, which will give you your first five Gratitude Crystals. Here are the rest!

Beedle's Missing Beetle

This quest is given to you by Beedle after you discover Bug Island. Sleep in his bed to wake up at night on Beedle's Island. He'll tell you about his prized Horned Colossus Beetle and how he lost track of it.

Head back to Bug Island and talk to Strich, who will tell you he found Beedle's beetle, and that you can have it if you pass his test. Play the mini-game, finish it in time, and you'll receive the missing bug and its cage from Strich.

Return to Beedle and he'll be so happy that he'll give you five Gratitude Crystals, as well as a discount on your next purchase in his shop.

The Dusty House

Head to Pipit's house on the east side of Skyloft at night and enter it. Pipit's mother, Mallara, will tell you how dusty the place has gotten, and ask you to clean it.

Get out your Gust Bellows and start blasting. There's dust all over the place, including on the bed, windows, and other furniture. Don't worry about the fact that the cleaning process knocks pottery off shelves and smashes it — Mallara doesn't seem to care.

Once you're done, she'll give you a red rupee and five Gratitude Crystals. You can repeat this process nightly for rupees.

The Fun Fun Fix

After unlocking the Thunderhead, you can start this quest. Head over to Fun Fun Island (the colorful one with the clown) and talk to the owner, Dodoh. He'll tell you his Party Wheel is missing.

You can use your Dowsing ability to find it — it's in the Lanayru Desert near the Desert Entrance Bird Statue. There's a Timeshift Stone inside some bombable rocks, so give it a whack to shift time. Shimmy up the vines and over to the left. You'll eventually find the Party Wheel buried in the sand.

Have Fi call Scrapper and then head back to Fun Fun Island for your reward — five Gratitude Crystals. You can also play the mini-game, now.

Flexin' Fledge

After completing the Lanayru Mining Facility dungeon, you'll notice a new potion, the Stamina Potion, is in stock at Luv's stall in the Bazaar. You'll need one for this quest, so purchase it.

Head over to the Knight Academy and talk to Fledge, who will tell you that he's trying to get in better shape, and that you should visit him at night. Sleep in his bed to pass the time, then talk to him. He'll need some more energy to do more of a workout, and you can give him the Stamina Potion to help out.

After finishing the Ancient Cistern, you can do this process again. Visit him again later after finishing another dungeon, and he'll be a pushup master. He'll thank you with five Gratitude Crystals, as well as offering a new mini-game.

Item Check Crush

There's a woman who works in the Bazaar, Peatrice. She runs the Item Check stall, which allows you to bank your items until you need them.

Over time, Peatrice will grow fond of Link. Each time you sleep in a bed, it'll progress her feelings for him. Once she starts calling him "darling," you can earn some Gratitude Crystals. You can reach this point either naturally through the course of the game, or just speedrun it by sleeping a bunch of times in a row and talking to her each time. However, since you're sleeping for other reasons throughout the game, you can also just let it happen naturally.

Once she's calling Link "darling," talk to her father, Peater, at night. If you haven't spoken to him before, you'll need to introduce yourself, then sleep to pass to the next day, and talk to him again. He'll tell you about some rascal that's pursuing his daughter's affection. From here, you're tasked with tracking this person, which is, of course, you. Talk to Peatrice again and she'll ask you to meet her at her place at night.

When you arrive, you'll be presented with two options. You can either break it off with Peatrice, and subsequently break her heart, then receive five Gratitude Crystals from her father the following night. Or, you can share your affection with Peatrice, and she'll give you the five Gratitude Crystals, instead.

Note: You can't do both!

Bertie's Baby Rattle

It's time to search for yet another lost item!

Make your way to Bertie and Luv's house and sleep in their bed. At night, talk to Bertie, who will inform you his baby's rattle is misisng.

Head to the floating islands and use the Clawshots to make your way up the vines and over to the big island. From the waterfall, you can glide over to the bird's nest that you can see from up there. You'll need to control your glide carefully.

Once you make it across, use the Gust Bellows to blow away the sand and collect the rattle. Return it for five Gratitude Crystals, courtesy of Bertie.

Crystal Ball Quest

After the second time you fight the Imprisoned, you'll see that Sparrot, the Bazaar's fortune teller, is gone. Skyloft's residents will tell you that his crystal ball is broken so he can't tell fortunes.

Visit Sparrot's house on the east side of Skyloft. You have to enter under the land bridge to access it. He'll ask if you can use Scrapper to find a new crystal ball on the Surface, and then Fi will let you know that you can douse for such a thing.

Head down to Eldin — specifically the Earth Temple Bird Statue. A lamppost near the entrance to the temple has an orb that will work perfectly as a crystal ball, it seems. Use the nearby air current to get up to the higher platform, then use the Clawshots to pull yourself over to the temple. Ask Fi to get Scrapper and then head back to Sparrot.

He'll give you five Gratitude Crystals and a discount on your next fortune.

Bruised Bird

It seems the people of Skyloft are really bad at keeping track of their loved ones and possessions.

This time, the missing person is Orielle, a young woman from Skyloft. Her brother, Parrow, can be found in the Plaza with a thought bubble over his head. Talking to him reveals that his sister went flying recently and has been gone for a strangely long time. He'll tell you she was interested in a colorful island, referring to Fun Fun Island.

On your way over there, you'll see a small island where Orielle and her Loftwing are. Head down to speak to Orielle and she'll tell you that her Loftwing was injured and needs some medicine.

You can either head to Faron Woods to get some mushrooms by swiping them with your sword and then using a Bottle to catch the spores, or just head back to skyloft and ask Parrow for the medicine.

Return to Orielle and give her the medicine, and she'll give you five Gratitude Crystals to express her thanks. You can head back to Parrow to receive another five, making this the only sidequest where you can earn ten Gratitude Crystals. If you got the medicine from the brother, you can keep the Bottle. If you got it from the Surface, Parrow will give you the Bottle afterward.

Pumpkin Plow

To start this quest, you'll need to have done a few things. First, you need to have met Guld, the Mogma Elder, at the beginning of the Fire Sanctuary dungeon. Next, make sure you've obtained the Piece of Heart from the Lumpy Pumpkin by breaking the chandelier (roll into the railing a few times to do this). Finally, you'll need to have fixed that chandelier by doing the three tasks Pumm assigns to you.

Once these conditions are met, chat with Kina at the pumpkin patch on Pumpkin Landing. Apparently, she needs help plowing the field. Fi will let you dowse for a target, which ends up being Guld the Mogma Elder. You can finnd him in the southern portion of the Eldin region, inside the volcano the area you can enter with the air geyser, but you'll need to skydive to reach him, as he's on a platform. He'll let you know that he's looking for work, so Fi will call Scrapper to carry Guld up to his new job on Pumpkin Landing, solving two problems at once.

Return to the pumpkin patch and talk to Kina, who will give you five Gratitude Crystals.

Instructor Owlan and Oolo the Kikwi

The Knight Academy Instructor, Owlan, is someone you should know pretty well by now. However, what you might not know is that he loves plants and studies them extensively.

But, as any plant lover can tell you, it never seems like you have enough, and Owlan is no different. He's looking for something new and unique to study, and asks you to help him out.

Head to Faron, of course, and look for the Kikwis (Fi will let you dowse for them). You'll need to talk to one Kikwi, specifically: Oolo. This little friend is worried about monsters returning to the forest, and wants to head somewhere safe. Perfect! Have Fi call Scrapper to bring Oolo up to Skyloft, where he'll become the newest subject of Owlan's studies. The Instructor will then give you five Gratitude Crystals as thanks.

Paper, Please

This sidequest is a weird one with two equally terrible ending options, but you'll end up with some Gratitude Crystals either way.

After you defeat the Imprisoned for the first time, you'll be able to start this quest. Head to the Bazaar and talk to Dovos, a man sitting in the eating area, and he'll tell you about a crying woman he heard in the Knight Academy. Then, talk to the woman in the kitchen of the Academy, Henya, and she'll mention some voices coming from the bathroom in the night. Finally, go to bed and wake up at night, then head to the bathroom. Some spooky voice will ask for paper. Head to bed once more, then wake up and the quest should be activated.

Talk to Cawlin and he'll give you a love letter, which he wants you to deliver to Karane. You can probably see where this is going. From here, you have two options: give the letter to Karane (Option A), or give it to the ghostly voice in the bathroom (Option B).

Option A: Give the letter to Karane, who thinks it's from Pipit. Inform Pipit about Karane's feelings, then head back to see her. Cawlin will see what's happening, run off with a broken heart, and then Pipit and Karane will end up together. Ouch. To thank you for playing matchmaker, Pipit will give you five Gratitude Crystals.

Option B: Make it nighttime by sleeping in a bed, and then you can bring the love letter to the ghostly voice. The hand will thank you, and what it does with the love letter is entirely up to your imagination. Sleep to make it daytime again and talk to Cawlin. He'll be very upset with you for doing that with his love letter and speak angrily with you from that point forward. Make it night one more time, and head to Groose's room. The hand will be there, creepily embracing Cawlin. It'll tell you how happy it is that you've introduced it to Cawlin, and give you five Gratitude Crystals.

Rewards

Here's a rundown of what you'll earn for finding Gratitude Crystals and giving them to Batreaux:

Gratitude Crystals Reward
5 Medium Wallet
10 Piece of Heart
30 Big Wallet and the Cursed Medal*
40 Gold Rupee
50 Giant Wallet
70 2x Gold Rupee
80 Tycoon Wallet and Batreaux's Transformation

*The Cursed Medal is optional. See our Medals guide for more info.

Batreaux's demon form is what drew monsters to Skyloft at night. So, after giving him all of the game's Gratitude Crystals, there's actually another "reward." Monsters will stop appearing in Skyloft at night, since Batreaux is now a human. You'll also see him hanging around Skyloft, since he now fits in with the other residents, which is what he wanted all along. Cute!
