Splitgate Teasing Big News for Gamescom 2021

Splitgate has been one of 2021's most exciting surprises. The arena shooter went virally successful when it launched its open beta in July and has only grown in popularity since then. Splitgate developer 1047 Games even confirmed that the game's open beta has crossed 10 million downloads, a stunning milestone for a game that most likely hadn't heard of just two months ago. But 1047's only just getting started with Splitgate and is prompting players to tune into Gamescom for an upcoming big announcement.

In a brief tweet posted Wednesday afternoon, 1047 asked fans to check out Gamescom 2021 on August 25 for what it describes as "more exciting news." August 25 is the date of Gamescom's Opening Night Live broadcast, the Geoff Keighley-hosted livestream framed as a major gaming keynote full of announcements and reveals. It would be safe to assume, given 1047's tweet, that Splitgate will have an announcement to make as part of Gamescom ONL.

For further context, the rest of the tweet in which 1047 teases a Gamescom announcement revolves around the game's current open beta. More specifically, it's framed as an apology for the frequent extensions of the open beta, with the Gamescom announcement being pointed to with a wink and a nod. If that wasn't direct enough, a follow-up tweet says that Splitgate's Beta Battle Pass will end on August 24, with a literal winking emoji.

The message that 1047 is trying to convey is that a release date announcement for Splitgate is likely coming at Gamescom. 1047 pushed back Splitgate's release date when the game first launched its open beta and the servers crashed under the weight of too many players. The open beta has been extended multiple times as a result, as 1047 worked to keep servers up and Splitgate fans playing while it put the finishing touches on the final version of Splitgate.

Splitgate players could even read into 1047's message that the game could launch as soon as August 25. 1047 could end the Beta Battle Pass on August 24, announce the full game's launching at Gamescom ONL, and launch the first season's battle pass on August 25. It'd be an efficient transition, since Splitgate will be free-to-play at launch, with player retention being maximized.

In case Splitgate doesn't launch on August 25, 1047 Games has already clarified that even though the Beta Battle Pass ends on August 24 the open beta will remain open. Full launch or not, Splitgate will remain playable for the foreseeable future.

Spligate is currently in open beta and will launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S soon.
