Stardew Valley Bug Lets Players Fish in Unexpected Place

Stardew Valley is, for the most part, a fairly realistic game. As with any video game, though, it does have some strange bugs and glitches that are likely to raise eyebrows and turn a few heads. Redditor Joe_M0166 stumbled upon one such glitch recently while playing the game on Nintendo Switch, as they found their fishing line bobbing up and down in the sand of the desert. This strange glitch doesn't seem to negatively affect gameplay in any way, as it is mostly visual, but it is still odd nonetheless.

As one might expect, Stardew Valley players typically need to use water to fish. When casting their line, players can change the direction of their fishing line to a degree, but it should always land in a lake, pool, river, or other body of water. That didn't quite happen this time around, and Joe_M0166 ended up catching a sandfish in a surprising way.

After entering the desert area of Stardew Valley, players might notice this pool of water off the side of a cliff. Despite not being on the same elevation as it, players are able to cast their fishing lines here and catch some fish. For some reason, whether it be the location that Joe_M0166 was in when they started fishing or the way they moved the line, the bobber ended up floating in the sand rather than the water that was right next to it. To make things even stranger, the bobber continues to float as though it was in water, and the player even manages to catch a fish from here.

Ironically, the fish they caught was a Sand Fish, prompting many jokes about how this might actually have been an intended feature. Other commenters bring up the fact that there is actually a secret hidden within this very pond. If players fish here for long enough, they will eventually fish up a present with the Pyramid Decal inside of it. This doesn't seem to be linked to fishing on the sand, as this is more than likely just a visual bug that occurs at this specific location.

When trying to explain the bug, most think it has something to do with elevation. Although the line casts straight out towards the pond from where the player is, the bobber itself doesn't actually reach the water. Instead it floats in the air above the water, but the two dimensional nature of Stardew Valley makes it look as though it's actually in the sand. Whatever the reason, the glitch certainly makes for a funny moment.

Stardew Valley is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
