Super Mario 64 was released back in 1996 for the N64, and it’s clearly still highly regarded today—we just didn’t know how high. Not only did Super Mario 64 just sell for more than it ever has before, but it currently holds the record for most spent in an auction on a single video game (Thanks, Kotaku).

If you’re unfamiliar with Wata Games, they’re a group known for grading or scoring a game’s condition to determine its value. This particular copy of Super Mario 64 was given a 9.8 rating on the Wata Scale, making it one of less than five known sealed copies in such great condition. This is the reason this copy of the game was able to sell for such a high price. Though it was originally listed at $100 thousand dollars just a couple days ago, it took almost no time at all for the game’s price to skyrocket.
Super Mario 64 has proven to still be relevant today in other ways too. Within this last week, a speedrunner just managed to beat the game in only seven minutes and ten seconds. While this seems completely impossible, the speedrunner defeated bowser while only collecting one star. There is a trick to launching Mario through the door from a distance so that the star requirements are not a barrier.
