Terraria: Golem Boss Guide

Quick Links

The Golem is a difficult boss that you'll fight after Plantera in Hardmode Terraria. There have been a few changes to this boss fight for 1.4, mostly in Expert and Master mode.

Defeating the Golem is necessary to move through the progression of Terraria, getting the Cultists and Martian Invasion event to spawn. Therefore, at some point, you will have to defeat this boss if you want to beat the game. Here's our comprehensive guide on taking down this Jungle Temple menace.

How To Get The Golem To Spawn

The Golem is located at the heart of the Jungle temple, which is only accessible once you've defeated Plantera.

Check out this full progression guide for more information on which bosses to fight and when to fight them:

Once Plantera is defeated, you'll be able to get inside the Jungle Temple. The interior corridor leads to a wide-open area, where the Lihzahrd Altar is located. This is where you will spawn the Golem, a sort of makeshift boss arena already set up for you.

To activate the Altar, you need to place a single Lihzahrd Power Cell into it. These are dropped by the enemies (randomly) in the Temple, and located inside the chests you find along the way.

Tips to prepare for the Golem fight:

  • Clear the area of traps. These can be really, really annoying in the fight, and only take a second to get rid of. You don't need a special Pickaxe or anything.
  • Place some platforms around the main temple room. This gives you a bit more space to use and hopefully helps you evade the Golem's attacks.
  • Prepare your arena. Place down campfires and Heart Lanterns, like you would in any other boss arena. Really struggling? Cover the floor in honey so you can hop into it to heal quickly.
  • Place down banners for the Lihzahrds and Flying Snakes, because these annoying mobs will continue to spawn even during the boss fight. It's no fun dying to a mob when you've got the boss down to five percent health. Seriously.

Weapons You Need To Beat The Golem

There are loads of weapons you can pick from after defeating Plantera. It all depends on whether you've opted for a melee, ranged, summoner, or mage build.

Here's a full class breakdown for each class:

Here are some of our favorite weapons from each class to beat the Golem:

  • Melee – We're big Yoyo fans, so we have to recommend The Eye of Cthulhu Yoyo. You can get this item by summoning the Solar Eclipse, which is actually activated by items from inside the Jungle Temple. Makes sense that's probably one of the best weapons to use to kill the Golem. Try and get one with the Demonic modifier.
  • Ranged – You'll fight the Golem in a very tight space (inside the temple chamber), so ranged weapons can be a bit spooky to use. If you do go for a Ranged build, we've got to recommend the Megashark. Just an awesome weapon all-around. Crafted with Illegal Gun Parts, Shark Fins, Soul of Might, and the Minishark.
  • Magic – Again, the Golem hits hard and the area is small, so Magic users might find themselves getting squished a lot. We recommend a combo of the Nimbus Rod (drop a few clouds in the chamber, it's small so the Golem can't move around much) and something like the Spectre Staff or Inferno Fork. You've got options.

Best Armor For The Golem Fight

This depends on your class (check those builds above), but there is a rough guide of what sort of armor level you should have before trying to defeat the Golem.

  • Hallowed Armor – Crafted with the bits and pieces of the Mechanical Bosses, a set of Hallowed Armor is more than enough for the Golem fight. If you're playing in Expert or Master mode, you might want to spec up your armor a bit more.
  • Chlorophyte Armor – Obviously a bit harder to get a full set of, Chlorophyte armor is also ideal for the Golem fight, especially if you change up the headgear to suit your build and weapons.

Fight Strategy

The Golem fight is not an easy fight. Even with all the best weapons, accessories, armor, and a fully complete build, the compact area you have to fight the Golem in makes it a tricky battle. Here is a rough strategy rundown for the fight.

  • Mobility is so important. You need a good pair of Wings to make it easy to navigate the enclosed space and hop between platforms.
  • Buff up, because why not? Get a good rest, eat some food for the Well Fed buff, and drink some potions that work for your class, like the Archery Potion.
  • One of our favorite methods is to use Teleporters. It's a bit of cheesy strat, but as of 1.4 it still works really well. You just need to set up two Teleporters at either end of the chamber. Wire them up, and then put down a couple of Pressure Plates. You can basically teleport back and forward really fast, unleash some spells/bullets, then teleport again. We've used this method a few times with great success. Oh, and if you didn't know, the Temple is absolutely COVERED in wires. You don't even need to bother crafting any.
