The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Autosaves

As we recently reported, The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is getting a whole lot of quality of life improvements. Almost ten years since the original Wii game’s launch, the upgrades to this remaster are clearly aiming to bring it more in line with modern Zelda games like Breath of the Wild.

Nintendo uploaded a video going over the expected improvements – higher frame-rate, the ability to speed through dialogue, skippable cutscenes etc – but seemed to miss one handy little feature out. While not explicitly announced in the trailer, a brief clip of the save slots shows that one is labelled “autosave”, suggesting that players will no longer have to wait until they reach a checkpoint to save progress.

In the original Skyward Sword, players could only save at Bird Statues. As we saw in the clip, you can still save here, but when the quest log was shown, there was already an autosave completed without touching the statue. One theory is that it will only autosave if Link is somewhat near the statue, saving players from having to touch it constantly. This would align with the other quality of life improvements made, which are all in aid of speeding up playthroughs, and getting rid of any needless obstacles.

Of course, since this wasn’t explicitly mentioned in the trailer, there is the possibility that it won’t end up in the final version of the game. That being said, the autosave slot doesn’t look like something thrown together for testing purposes, so it may just be that Nintendo didn’t feel that it was a big enough change to warrant mentioning. This is especially likely if the autosave only kicks in when Link is near a Bird Statue anyway.

Whatever the case, we’ll find out for sure in less than two weeks when The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD launches on Nintendo Switch. It marks the first rerelease for this divisive Zelda game, which was originally released in 2011 for Wii.
