Tim Schafer Would "Love To" Remake Psychonauts

Tim Schafer has said to he would "love to" remake Psychonauts further down the line.

In an interview with Gamerheadquarters, Tim Schafer was asked about the possibility of remaking the original Psychonauts, especially considering that there are going to be lots of new players coming to the sequel thanks to Xbox Game Pass.

In response, Tim Schafer said, "A lot of source material doesn’t exist, such as the cutscenes and they’d have to be done from scratch. It’s possible in the future, a sequel would actually be easier than doing the first one. The acting, lots of things hold up well. Someday we would love to.”

Schafer's response here makes it clear that any attempt to properly revisit Psychonauts would take a lot more work than some might think. The specific example mentioned here is the cutscenes, which would need to be remade, but the team would also have to remake every single brain level in the game with updated assets. Although much of the design work is there, there would still be a ton of work to do, by the sounds of it.

Schafer also mentions that it would be easier to make a sequel to Psychonauts 2 than it would be to update the original game, which seems to indicate that a third game in the series is possible. Double Fine famously doesn't do sequels and prefers to create original content, so it's clear that Psychonauts means a lot to the company.

Psychonauts fans might remember that early into Psychonauts 2's crowdfunding campaign, Double Fine released a video that showed off a version of Whispering Rock remade in the new engine. Although this was right at the start of the development process and much has changed for Psychonauts 2 since this video, it's interesting to get a small glimpse at what one area in the game would look like when updated. Sadly, it's only the first small chuck of Whispering Rock, but it's still a treat for fans to see.
