Undead Labs is hiring. The State of Decay developer is looking for a sound designer to help make sound effects explicitly for State of Decay 3, the upcoming zombie horror survival game. The job ad itself isn’t particularly surprising, given the fact State of Decay 3 is very much in development, but it does provide us with some insight on what to expect in the sequel.
"We’re seeking a creative and technically-minded sound designer who will amplify gameplay and create unforgettable moments for our millions of State of Decay fans," reads the ad. Whoever gets hired will "design tailored SFX for the game utilizing custom recordings and library assets." Most of that will be done using a program called Audiokinetic Wwise, but implementation in-game will be done “through Blueprints (UE5)."
UE5 means Unreal Engine 5, which is Epic’s new game engine currently available in early access. It’s possible that Undead Labs might be using Unreal Engine for some other purpose, but it seems extremely likely that State of Decay 3 is going to be built in Unreal Engine 5.

Considering State of Decay 2 was made in Unreal Engine 4, staying in the same engine environment is likely to keep things simple for the devs while also providing a robust platform to create their latest game. We’ve already seen how incredible Unreal Engine 5 can look with demos from The Coalition, who showcased their Alpha Point tech demo at GDC last week.
The Coalition also showed us a character demo where Unreal Engine 5's character modeling was on full display. Given the incredible fidelity showcased on the male model, it's also possible that the lone character was created using MetaHuman, a new option for creating human models in Unreal.
As for State of Decay 3, the job ad didn’t provide us with even a hint of when the game plans to release, so we’ll have to remain patient on this one.
Thanks, PureXbox!
