Valve Hasn’t Found A Game The Steam Deck Can’t Run

Valve says that it hasn't found a game yet that the Steam Deck can't run.

As reported by PC Gamer, a new interview with IGN has Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais talking about the system's performance and how Valve has been testing to see what it can handle.

One of the principal concerns with the Steam Deck so far has been how it's going to run such a wide variety of games, and if it'll be able to do so with ease. Thankfully, Valve has tested the system with numerous 2020 games, and it's been able to handle them all.

Pierre-Loup Griffais said, "We've been looking at various games the past few years in the back catalogue, but the real test for us was games that were coming out last year. They just couldn't really run very well on the previous types of prototypes and architectures we were testing. This is the first time we've achieved the level of performance that is required to really run the latest generation of games without problems. All the games we wanted to be playable is, really, the entire Steam library. We haven't really found something we could throw at this device that it couldn't handle."

Valve hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat also spoke further on the console's specs, saying, "We might actually be one of the first products to showcase this memory technology. That gives a lot of future-proofing, especially since we're not the only people with this architecture. Any optimization that game developers make for this new architecture will carry forth to benefit us as well."

It's clear from this interview that the Steam Deck has been a long-standing idea for Valve and something that it has been wanting to do for some time. From these comments, it seems like the technology just wasn't there until now, with Yazan Aldehayyat saying, "It wasn't until now that we felt the entire Steam catalogue is available to people who have this device."
