Organizers of an upcoming Smash Bros. tournament have pre-emptively canceled the event after a similar one was shut down by Nintendo.
Nintendo is somewhat infamous when it comes to its reluctance to play well with others. Not just other companies and developers, but even its own players. That was demonstrated again last month when Riptide was contacted by Nintendo in regard to its upcoming event, during which a Super Smash Bros. Brawl mod called Project+ would be used to allow the Wii game to be played competitively.
Even though a legitimate copy of Brawl is needed in order to use the mod, Nintendo still has an issue with it being used and requested the tournament not take place. In response to Nintendo's request, another event that planned on using the Project+ mod taking place later this year has reacted accordingly, announcing it will also be removing any tournaments using the mod from its event.

Beyond The Smash, which will take place in November, broke the news this week on Twitter that it will no longer be holding tournaments that would have required the use of Project+. “We do not feel confident we will be able to have Project+ at Mainstage 2021,” the statement reads. “Therefore, we have made the decision to not have Project+ tournaments or setups at the event.”
BTS adds that it thinks announcing this now, with two months' notice and before Nintendo has even been in touch, is a better option than having to cancel days ahead of the event, which seems inevitable. That was the case for Riptide which has understandably resulted in a lot of unhappy Smash players and fans. Unfortunately, Riptide didn't have the same warning signs that BTS has had.
That being said, this isn't the first time Nintendo has shut down Smash tournaments using mods to make older games in the series playable on a larger competitive level. It did something similar to the annual Big House tournament which included a Melee tournament with the Slippi mod enabled, allowing for the game to be played online without issue. It remains unclear why Nintendo is so against mods like these being used, especially since copies of the game still need to be bought to use them, and tournaments will only expose the games to even bigger audiences.
