Blissey’s Moveset Could Make It The Healer Pokemon Unite Desperately Needs

It was announced today that Blissey is the next champion coming to Pokemon Unite this week, and Twitter user @ItsGalex_ has created a handy graphic that details all of the new fighter’s stats and abilities. While damage and healing numbers are not yet available, it’s clear that Blissey will fill a traditional support role similar to Eldegoss. While Mr. Mime and Wigglytuff can be great in the right hands (and some would even argue that Wiggly is more useful than Eldegoss) neither of them have true healing or shielding abilities. Eldegoss has so far been the only healer Support, and is considered by many to be a mandatory pick in higher ranks. With Blissey joining the roster, support players are finally going to have another option.

Blissey looks to be a pure support character with minimal offensive potential. Its ability simply allows it to remove all status conditions when triggered, which should allow Blissey to have better presence in lane, stay with its teammates, and escape when necessary. Blissey, like Snorlax, also has great body block potential because of its size, which makes it a great lane partner for squishy Attackers like Greninja and Gardevoir.

To start, Blissey has a simple melee ability called Pound that reduces target movement speed, as well as a Heal Pulse ability that provides single-target healing to an ally. Once it reaches level four, you’ll be able to choose between Helping Hand, which increases movement and attack speed to allies within range and makes all of Blissey’s basic attacks boosted, or Egg Bomb, which is a ranged attack with a big AOE and huge knockback.

These are playstyle-defining abilities that have completely different utility depending on circumstances. Helping Hand is going to be great for aggressive teams that come together for team fights, while Egg Bomb is the perfect ability for defending solo and keeping Speedsters and Attackers off of you. At Level 4, this choice may come before you’ve really had a chance to get a feel for how the match is going to go, but if you’re playing with friends, Helping Hand is probably going to be your go-to move to turn the tide on team fights.

The level six choices are even more interesting. Heal Bell will remove all status conditions, make Blissey immune to hindrances, and give it a shield, while Soft-Boiled throws an egg to an ally that heals them. This is likely a choice that will change each game depending on the matchups, as Heal Bell will be more important when laning against Pokemon like Charizard and Ninetails. Alternatively, Soft-Boiled has up to three charges, so it’s a great active heal that can save a teammate from death and give your team a big advantage. I love these situational choices that let you react to the conditions of the game.

Finally, Blissey’s Unite Move, Bliss Assistance, allows Blissey to rush towards an ally, knocking away anyone in its path, and buff the target with a shield and increased attack damage. Blissey also body blocks a portion of the damage the Pokemon would receive, making this the ultimate “get down Mr. President” ability. This is what support characters are all about, and I can’t wait to try out Blissey’s healing potential later this week.

Both Mr. Mime and Wigglytuff have great damage potential and CC abilities, but neither of them feel like a true support. Eldegoss offers its team a tremendous amount of sustainability, but it can definitely get a little boring to one-trick Eldegoss in every game, especially in the higher ranks. Blissey seems to be a viable pick to replace Eldegoss, or potentially even to dual heal with it in place of a Defender or second Attacker. We’ll see what role Blissey plays in the coming days, but right now, it’s looking like the exact character Pokemon Unite needs.
